Frostbite (Dongchuang)
Frostbite commonly occurs in people of low social status and poverty. It is caused by exposure to cold, leading to initial pain followed by swelling in the face, ears, hands, and feet, which may ulcerate and discharge pus and blood. Symptoms such as fever may appear upon warming. Some individuals with weak Yuan Qi (Original Qi) are also susceptible due to their inability to tolerate cold. Internally, decoctions that tonify the Middle Jiao and benefit Qi should be administered. Externally, a paste made from powdered Fuzi (Aconite Lateralis Radix Preparata) and unripe fruits of the tree (Shuzi) applied to the affected area yields excellent results.
Arrow Poison Wound (Jian Du Chuang)
Arrows tipped with poison are invariably fatal if they strike a person. Historically, Guan Yu survived such an injury through Hua Tuo's procedure of scraping bone to remove poison, thereby ensuring his safety. Recently, enemy arrows have been designed with backward-facing barbs arranged in a tripartite structure and rotated installation; once the arrowhead penetrates the body, even if the shaft is withdrawn, the rotating barb cannot be extracted without incising the flesh. The wound must be washed with menstrual water from a woman to resolve the toxicity.
Traumatic Injury from Blows or Falls (Da Die Shang Chuang)
Injuries resulting from blows or falls vary in severity. Internally, herbs that invigorate Blood and relieve pain should be taken. Externally, fresh leaves of Sanqi (Notoginseng Radix et Rhizoma) should be crushed and applied; this immediately stops pain and disperses blood stasis. If the wound comes into contact with Sanqi powder, it will dry out and not ulcerate. If not, fresh leaves should be crushed and reapplied for optimal effect. Alternatively, if external application is omitted, Sanqi can be decocted in water with wine ingested orally for superior results. Injuries from beating (Zhang Chuang) are treated similarly.
Sunburn (Ri Shai Chuang)
During the intense heat of the Dog Days (Sanfu), hardworking individuals who labor tirelessly and disregard their physical well-being may suffer from severe sun exposure. This leads to pain followed by ulceration, forming wounds. These lesions are not generated by Blood and Qi deficiency. Internally, Xiangru Yin (Mushroom Decoction) supplemented with Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) and Lianhua (Lotus Plumule) or similar clearing agents is indicated. Externally, applying Jinhuang San (Golden Yellow Powder), Zhibai San (Processed Phellodendron Powder), or Qingdai (Indigo Naturalis) ensures recovery.
Tiger Bite Wound (Hu Shi Chuang)
Encounters with tigers result in death or severe injury. Injuries that form open sores do occur. When a tiger spots a human, it attacks with the ferocity of a cat hunting a mouse. Tigers possess toxic saliva that can spray onto victims, causing immediate coma or confusion. The patient should immediately ingest one to two bowls of pure Sesame Oil (Xiangyou) to expel the toxin. The wound should then be washed with sesame oil. Internally, formulas that calm the Spirit and benefit Qi should be administered. Externally, Yuzhen San (True Hero Powder) and powders promoting tissue regeneration should be used.
