Yandan (Eyelid Carbuncle) arises on the eyelids, presenting with redness, heat, swelling, and pain. It is caused by wind-heat affecting the Spleen and Stomach meridians. If wind predominates, the swelling is easy to dissipate; if heat predominates, the hardness and swelling are difficult to resolve. In the initial stage, it is advisable to use Baidu Huanglian Wan (Poison-Expelling Coptis Pill) to clear heat and detoxify. For severe cases, Guijin Wan (Noble Gold Pill) can be used to purge accumulation. Externally, slices of lean pork may be applied, or Kangong Dingzi (Kangong Stick) may be smeared. Once pus has formed, it should be punctured with a needle, followed by the application of Beiyegao (Banyan Leaf Plaster) to promote wound healing.
Baidu Huanglian Wan (Poison-Expelling Coptis Pill): Treats Yandan of the upper and lower eyelids.
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) (each 2 liang), Juhua (Chrysanthemi Flos) (2 liang), Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (1.5 liang), Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 1 liang).
Grind the above herbs into powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of wutong seeds. Take 50 pills per dose, washed down with tea water.
Caofan Gao (Licorice-Alum Paste):
Fengcao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma Praeparata cum Melle) (2 liang), Zaofan (Melanteritum) (5 qian).
Decoct in water to obtain a thick liquid, filter out the dregs, and decoct again until concentrated. Add Bingpian (Borneolum Syntheticum). Dip a chicken feather into the paste and frequently sweep it over the swollen area.
Alternative method: Slice lean pork, wash with water to remove blood, and apply to the carbuncle, changing frequently.
Kangong Dingzi (see "Zhongyang" chapter); Guijin Wan (see "Zhongyang Fuyu" chapter).
Zhenyan (Stye) is also known as Tugan. Small sores arise between the eyelashes. Mild cases heal without suppuration; severe cases develop into fistulas. If exposed to wind, the head and face swell, and the eyes become red and painful. In the initial stage, puncturing with a needle leads to recovery.
Xiongpi San (Ligusticum Powder): Treats Zhenyan.
Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (as the sovereign herb), Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride) (use half the amount).
Grind into powder. Take 2 qian per dose, mixed with fine tea and Chrysanthemum tea for administration. Externally, apply a mixture of Kufan (Alumen Exsiccatum) powder and egg white. For significant swelling, mix Tianxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma) powder with Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix Recens) to make a paste, and apply to the Taiyang acupoint; the swelling will subside naturally.
Tanke (Phlegm Nodule) arises on the eyelids, located between the skin and fascia. Its shape resembles a bean, hard but painless. It is caused by phlegm stagnation due to fire. Mild cases resolve spontaneously; severe cases may transform into Ying diseases (goiter-like swellings) or fistulas. In the initial stage, grind Sheng Nanxing (Arisaematis Rhizoma Recens) with vinegar to a thick consistency and apply frequently to the affected area. For thin skin, gently break the surface and squeeze out white powder with fingernails to cure. Apply Beiyegao (Banyan Leaf Plaster) to close the wound (see "Gaoyao Men" chapter).
Jiaochuang (Granular Eyelid Conjunctivitis) and Suchuang (Millet Granules) arise inside the eyelids. They are caused by blood-heat in the Spleen and Stomach. Jiaochuang presents as red, hard, and difficult to dissipate; Suchuang presents as yellow, soft, and easy to dissipate. Nowadays, people use Dengcao (Junci Medulla) and Zhuye (Bambusae Folium) to treat the branch symptoms. Is this not inferior to clearing the Spleen and cooling the blood to treat the root? It is suitable to wash with Putilou (Bodhi Dew).
