Deng Yong (Smallpox Carbuncle) refers to toxic pathogens lingering within the meridians. The onset location is indefinite, presenting with swelling but without redness. If the toxin remains in the muscle layer, it is easy to treat; if it knots at the bone joints, success in treatment is difficult.
[Note] This condition arises because during smallpox eruption, the pus filling was insufficient, causing the toxic pus to fail to penetrate and emerge, thereby remaining and knotting within the meridians, capable of arising anywhere. Small lesions resembling plums are termed "Du" (Toxic Nodule), while large ones resembling peaches are termed "Yong" (Carbuncle). They present as diffuse swelling without redness or pain, accompanied by fever and irritability. If a single lesion occurs, the toxin is in the muscles, which is a favorable syndrome (Shun Zheng) and easy to treat; if multiple lesions erupt consecutively, it is like a small boat carrying heavy weight, representing a dangerous syndrome; if it knots between bone joints or erupts in pairs, the toxicity is vigorous. After ulceration, Qi and Blood seep out, and the wound fails to close, representing an unfavorable syndrome (Ni Zheng). At the initial stage, forced resolution should not be attempted; all cases should take Tou Nong San (Pus-Expelling Powder) externally applied with Wu Long Gao (Black Dragon Ointment); once the pus matures, puncture with a needle, followed by application of Jia Wei Tai Yi Gao (Modified Tai Yi Plaster); for those with deficient Qi and Blood, Baoyuan Tang (Protecting Origin Decoction) should be taken concurrently. Only after ulceration does the tidal fever completely subside, indicating that the toxic vapors are cleared; otherwise, it may reappear elsewhere. Avoid raw/cold foods, hard noodles, and stimulating foods.
Baoyuan Tang (Protecting Origin Decoction)
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Rhizoma, stir-baked with soil), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) (each 1 qian), Gan Cao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried) (0.3 qian).
One slice of Sheng Jiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens), two pieces of Hong Zao Mei (Fructus Jujubae pulp), two cups of water, decocted to 0.8 cup, taken far from meals.
[Fang Ge - Prescription Song]: Baoyuan Tonifies True Original Qi, suitable for Spleen-Stomach deficiency; Ren Shen, Bai Zhu, Honey-fried Gan Cao, combined with Dang Gui, Sheng Jiang, Hong Zao, and Huang Qi.
Tou Nong San (Pus-Expelling Powder) and Wu Long Gao (Black Dragon Ointment) (both see Swollen Ulcer Section)
Jia Wei Tai Yi Gao (Modified Tai Yi Plaster) (see Ulcerated Ulcer Section)
Pu Tao Yi (Grape Plague) presents with spots resembling grapes, caused by contracting epidemic pestilence qi, leading to stagnation and condensation. It manifests as widespread cyanotic-purple macules on the body, with toxic pathogens attacking the teeth, resembling canker sores.
[Note] This condition often occurs in infants who contract epidemic pestilence qi, which stagnates in the skin and condenses into formation. Large and small cyanotic-purple macules resemble grapes in color and shape, appearing all over the body, predominantly on the lower legs. In severe cases, evil toxins attack the Stomach, causing gum rot, foul odor, and bleeding, resembling dental canker sores (Ya Gan), while the cyanotic-purple macules appear paler. Over time, this leads to emaciation and weakness. At the onset, Ling Yang Jiao San (Antelope Horn Powder) is suitable; for chronic deficiency, Wei Pi Tang (Stomach-Spleen Decoction) is suitable, along with rinsing the mouth with Mi Tan Shui (Rice Wash Water). Applying Fei Gan San (Non-Canker Powder) four to five times daily yields effective results. Recently, middle-aged individuals with lower body deficiency have also suffered from this condition, treated similarly.
Ling Yang Jiao San (Antelope Horn Powder)
Ling Yang Jiao (Saiga Tatarica Cornu, sliced), Mai Dong (Ophiopogonis Radix, heart removed), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma), Niu Bang Zi (Arctii Fructus, stir-baked and crushed), Fang Feng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix) (each 0.8 fen), Gan Cao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma, raw) (0.2 fen).
Two cups of water, ten leaves of Dan Zhu Ye (Lophatheri Herba), decocted to 0.6 cup, taken far from meals.
[Fang Ge - Prescription Song]: Ling Yang Jiao San contains Mai Dong and Huang Qin, Zhi Mu, Niu Bang Zi, Fang Feng, Gan Cao, and Xuan Shen; suitable for early-stage Pu Tao Yi, adding Zhu Ye yields miraculous effects.
Wei Pi Tang (Stomach-Spleen Decoction)

Two cups of water, decocted to 0.6 cup, taken far from meals. For those with weakness and spontaneous sweating, remove Sha Shen, add Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma) and Huang Qi (Astragali Radix) each 0.5 fen.
[Fang Ge - Prescription Song]: Wei Pi Tang treats Pu Tao Yi, suitable for long-standing deficiency and emaciation; Bai Zhu, Yuan Zhi, Mai Dong, Wu Wei Zi, Sha Shen, Gan Cao, Fu Shen, and Chen Pi.
Fei Gan San (Non-Canker Powder)
Bing Pian (Borneolum Syntheticum) (0.4 fen), Ren Zhong Bai (Natrii Uras) (calcined, remove foul odor, retain efficacy), Wu Bei Zi (Galla Chinensis, stir-baked to tea-brown color, retain efficacy) (each 1 liang).
Grind together into fine powder. First rinse the mouth with Mi Tan Shui (Rice Wash Water), then apply this medicine to the affected area.
[Fang Ge - Prescription Song]: Fei Gan consists of Ren Zhong Bai and Wu Bei Zi, ground together mixed with Bing Pian; physicians apply it to various Gan lesions, clearing heat, relieving pain, and removing foul odors.
