Da Hong Sheng (Great Red Ascendant): Chenzhou Da Pi Sha Cinnabar (Wu Qian, 5 qian), Ming Xiong Huang Realgar (Wu Qian, 5 qian), Shuiyin Mercury (Yi Liang, 1 liang), Huoxiao Saltpeter (Si Liang, 4 liang), Bai Fan White Alum (Yi Liang, 1 liang), Zao Fan Green Vitriol (Liu Qian, 6 qian). First, crush the two alums and saltpeter. Place them in a large copper spoon, add one cup of fire wine (high-proof alcohol) and stew until dissolved. Once dry, remove and grind finely. Separately, grind mercury, cinnabar, and realgar until no silver specks are visible. Then mix these powders with the saltpeter and alum powder and grind evenly. Prepare a Yangcheng clay jar by coating it with mud mixed with grass fibers to the thickness of a finger, and dry it in the shade. Gently pat it occasionally to prevent cracks. Mud from enamel jars can also be used. If cracks appear, patch them with jar mud until extremely dry, then sun-dry until crack-free before adding the prepared medicines. Cover the jar mouth with an iron oil lamp lid, secure with an iron beam, and tie tightly above and below the lid with iron wire. Seal the gaps around the jar mouth densely with cotton paper twists. Externally, seal the lid with fine熟 (calcined) gypsum powder mixed with vinegar. Add two pieces of charcoal to heat the lid, aiding the drying of the seal. Place three large nails on the ground and set the jar on them. Place a large piece of charcoal under the jar bottom, and build a "Hundred-Eye Furnace" around it. Burn for three incense sticks' duration. During the first incense stick, use only bottom fire; if the fire is too strong, mercury will ascend prematurely. For the second incense stick, use enough fire to fill half the jar, wiping clean with a water-dipped brush. For the third incense stick, keep the fire level with the jar mouth, fan it, and frequently wipe with water to prevent drying, which would cause premature mercury ascent. After three incense sticks, extinguish the fire. Once cooled, open and check: the medicinal gas should be sufficient, yielding about 6-7 qian of substance on the lid. Scrape this down, grind finely, and store in a porcelain jar. Pre-mix salt brine with thin jar mud, brush this mixture around the jar mouth to prevent gas leakage, as green smoke indicates mercury loss, rendering the preparation useless. This pill treats all post-ulceration sores, extracting toxins, removing necrotic tissue, and promoting flesh regeneration. If the sore opening is hard with dark purple-black flesh, apply a small amount of this pill with a chicken feather brush; it will immediately become red and vibrant. Without Red or White pills, ulcer doctors find it difficult to achieve immediate results.
Da Bai Sheng (Great White Ascendant): Shuiyin Mercury, Ku Zao Fan Calcined Green Vitriol, Yan Xiao Flame Saltpeter, Shiyan Salt (each Yi Liang, 1 liang). Grind together until no mercury specks remain. Place in a Yangcheng jar, cover the mouth with an iron oil lamp lid, and secure tightly with iron wire. Clamp the surroundings of the iron lid with white cotton silk strips. Externally, rub the jar with a paste made of five liang of salt and Guangfen (light powder) mixed with mud. Place in a Hundred-Eye Furnace. Initially use gentle fire (Wen Huo) for one incense stick, keeping the lid moist with slight water application using a brush. By the third incense stick, switch to intense fire (Wu Huo) to complete the process. Wait for cooling, then open and scrape off the white-colored substance that has ascended onto the lid. Grind finely and store. This pill can be taken internally or applied externally. Use this if the sore exudes yellow fluid; use Hong Fen Shuang (Red Powder Frost) if there is no fluid. One formula adds Pengsha Borax, Huang Dan Yellow Lead Oxide, Zhusha Cinnabar, Danfan Blue Vitriol, and Xionghuang Realgar.
Appendix: Shen Jiao Formula for Sealing Jar Mouth: Broken clay jar powder, straw shoe ash, yellow mud, Qingyin medicine powder, Shao Yan Zongzi (burned salt粽子) (each Yi Liang, 1 liang). Grind into fine powder, mix with salt brine to form a glue for the pill, pound finely in a mortar, and use a spatula to seal the jar mouth.
Xiao Hong Sheng (Small Red Ascendant): Zhen Shuiyin True Mercury (Liang, 2 liang), Jing Mingfan Pure White Alum (Liang, 2 liang), Ti Jing Huoxiao Refined Saltpeter (Liang, 2 liang). Crush and grind the three ingredients evenly. Place in an iron pot with ears, cover with a deep palace bowl, ensuring it is centered and stable. Fill the gap between the bowl and pot rim with finely ground Wei Shigao Calcined Gypsum, sealing the pot rim flatly. Place on a wind furnace. Refine using gentle fire initially, then intense fire, for three incense sticks. Leave overnight to cool. Scrape off the sealing gypsum with a knife, gently wipe the bowl walls, lift the bowl, and scrape off the ascended pill with a small knife. The color may be green, yellow, or red; store separately in porcelain bottles. Although colors differ, efficacy is identical. Aged for one year, it loses its fiery nature and becomes better with age. This medicine treats all sores, carbuncles, boils, and various toxic swellings. When pus begins to form at the onset, sprinkle this pill into the sore to promote pus discharge and toxin extraction. Cover with a plaster externally. If pus and necrotic tissue are completely removed, use a separate flesh-regenerating powder. Do not use this pill on the male scrotum, female nipples, or the upper and lower corners of the eyes if sores/toxins arise there, due to the risk of mercury toxicity with unpredictable consequences. Exercise caution.
Liu Xian Sheng Dan (Six Immortals Ascendant Pill): Shuiyin Mercury (San Liang, 3 liang), Huoxiao Saltpeter (San Liang, 3 liang), Mingfan White Alum (Wu Liang, 5 liang), Dongdan Eastern Lead Oxide (Si Liang, 4 liang), Qingfen Calomel (Liu Qian, 6 qian), Zaofan Green Vitriol (Yi Wu Qian, 1.5 liang). Prepare according to the method for Red Ascendant.
Bai Jiang Dan (White Descendant Pill, also known as Xia Bing Dui Pei Dan): Shuiyin Mercury, Jing Huoxiao Pure Saltpeter, Baifan White Alum, Zaofan Green Vitriol, Chao Baiyan Stir-fried White Salt (each Jiu Qian, 9 qian). Grind the five ingredients together until no mercury specks remain. Place in a new large Qingyin (silver-plated) jar. Melt over gentle fire; if the fire is too urgent, mercury will ascend and escape the furnace. Charcoal fire is best. Boil until no white smoke rises from the jar. Stir with a bamboo/wood branch until no medicinal residue lifts, indicating the medicine has adhered to the jar bottom, termed "Jie Tai" (forming the embryo). Once formed, place a large wooden basin filled with water, inside which sit a clean iron fire basin up to its mid-section. Invert the jar containing the formed embryo into the center of the iron basin. Seal the jar mouth with salt brine and yellow earth to prevent gas leakage (leakage causes furnace escape). Spread clean ash in the iron basin up to the jar's waist, leveling it without shaking the jar to avoid damaging the seal. Surround the jar bottom with red-hot chestnut charcoal. Fan gently to refine for one incense stick (Wen Huo/Gentle Fire). Fan slightly harder for another incense stick (Wu Huo/Intense Fire). Add charcoal as needed without interruption until the jar bottom is visible. Refine for one more incense stick, then extinguish. Wait until the next day for the basin charcoal to cool. Sweep away the ash, remove the seal, and open the jar. The white frost collected in the iron basin is the pill. Store in a porcelain bottle; aging improves it. The original embryo remaining in the jar, when ground and sprinkled, is effective for tinea (ringworm). To prevent incomplete embryo formation, if the inverted jar is heated, the embryo may fall into the iron basin, resulting in no descending pill (furnace escape). Alternatively, use an iron wire tripod to support the embryo in the furnace, which is safer. For carbuncles, back sores, and other severe toxins, apply approximately 1 li (0.03g) mixed with saliva to the top of the toxin, cover with a plaster. The next day, the toxin root is extracted, leaving a black fleshy mass on top, which falls off after 3-4 days. Apply ascending pills thereafter to complete healing. This pill can be made into strips using steamed flour cake moistened with water, dried, and stored in bamboo tubes as suppositories. For sinus tracts, insert the strip according to depth, cover with plaster, and squeeze out pus the next day. Repeat once or twice until the tract converts to pus. After the tract is gone, apply ascending pills several times to heal. This pill is ten times faster than ascending pills but is extremely potent and painful. Mix with raw Banxia Pinellia and a little Bingpian Borneol. One formula adds Chen Sha Cinnabar (2 qian), Xionghuang Realgar (2 qian), Pengsha Borax (5 qian); use Shuiyin Mercury (1 liang) and 1.5 liang each of the other four ingredients.
Da Bai Jiang (Great White Descendant): Shuiyin Mercury (Yi Liang, 1 liang), Qingyan Green Salt (Er Liang, 2 liang), Zaofan Green Vitriol (Er Liang, 2 liang), Huoxiao Saltpeter (Er Wu Qian, 2.5 liang), Lusha Halite Sand (San Qian, 3 qian), Xionghuang Realgar (San Qian, 3 qian), Chen Sha Cinnabar (San Qian, 3 qian), Bai Pi White Arsenic (Wu Fen, 0.5 fen), Mingfan White Alum (Er Liang, 2 liang). Grind uniformly, place in a Yangcheng jar, and dry over gentle fire. Descend for three incense sticks as previously described. Cool and retrieve the medicine, avoiding disturbance by strangers, chickens, or dogs. For swelling/toxins not yet formed into abscesses, mix with vinegar and apply to the head of the lesion. If it swells like a tung seed, the toxin dissipates. For formed lesions that refuse to rupture, apply this pill under a plaster on the head; it will rupture in half a day.
Xiao Bai Jiang (Small White Descendant): Shuiyin Mercury, Huoxiao Saltpeter, Shengfan Raw Alum (each Wu Fen, 0.5 fen), Shiyan Salt (Er Fen, 0.2 fen). Grind into powder, place in a Qingyin jar, and boil over charcoal fire with gentle heat. Boil until edges turn scorched yellow, continuing until the entire surface is scorched yellow-beige. Remove from fire and cool. Place a round, smooth grinding basin upside down. Invert the silver jar containing the medicine onto the basin. Wet the seam between the jar mouth and basin with cotton strips dipped in ink, and seal with salt mud. Sit the basin in a large water basin. Apply gentle fire to the jar bottom, fanning gently, transitioning from gentle to intense fire, lasting for five-inch incense sticks. Remove charcoal and cool. Sweep off external salt mud, open the jar, and collect the descended medicine from the basin bottom. The best quality is white and frost-like. Green, yellow, or black colors are unusable. Test with a silver hairpin or polished knife tip dipped in saliva; immediate rusting indicates good quality. Use fresh cotton to dip the medicine, tapping a small amount onto a plaster (less than ascending pills). Pain starts after drinking two cups of hot tea and subsides in half a day. For severe toxins, change the plaster daily; for mild ones, leave for 2-3 days. For large swollen toxins, apply Musk and Asafetida first, then this pill. To make "Bitou" (biting head) plasters replacing needles, mix flour paste with bamboo strips into thin lines, cut into sesame-sized pieces, place in the center of the plaster against the swelling. Avoid contact with fingers as it causes pain and peeling. Older pills are less painful and milder but require larger doses. If the first descent yields non-white medicine, scrape out the jar contents (useless) and collect only the basin residue. Re-grind with fresh Mercury (0.5 fen), Saltpeter (0.5 fen), Raw Alum (0.5 fen), and Salt (0.2 fen), plus any un-descended residue from the basin. Re-enter the silver jar and descend again. Repeat 2-3 times or even ten times until satisfactory. Total mercury used is 5 qian. Clean or replace the jar each time, using only 0.5 fen each of Mercury, Saltpeter, Raw Alum, and 0.2 fen Salt per cycle, until successful. Proper heat control is crucial. Insufficient heat leaves the embryo tender and mercury active, causing it to fall into the basin upon inversion. Excessive heat makes the embryo too old, causing mercury to fly away or fail to descend. The ideal state is an embryo neither too tender nor too old. Charcoal fire is optimal. For perforated sores, use water-refined descending method: Grind newly refined Bai Jiang Dan finely, sieve onto 5 cun of plain silk, roll tightly, bind with hemp thread, and boil in a clay pot with clear water for one shichen (2 hours), changing water three times. Hang the silk to dry in the wind, then brush off the medicine into a porcelain bottle. It causes no pain.
Yi Jiang (First Descent): Shuiyin Mercury (Liu Qian, 6 qian), Zhusha Cinnabar (Er Qian, 2 qian), Xionghuang Realgar (Er Qian, 2 qian), Pengsha Borax (Er Qian, 2 qian), Gancao Shuixiao Nitre (Licorice-boiled Saltpeter) (Yi Liang, 1 liang), Lv Dou Zhu Bai Pi (Mung Bean-boiled White Arsenic) (Yi Qian, 1 qian), Qingyan Green Salt (San Qian, 3 qian), Zhi Mingfan Prepared White Alum (Yi Liang, 1 liang), Shiyan Salt (Yi Liang, 1 liang). Grind into powder, place in a Yangcheng jar, melt and solidify with fire. Cover the jar mouth with a new teacup, seal四周 with mud. Place a copper ladle with Later Heaven Bagua diagram drawn on its edge, filled with 6-7 fen of water. Place the teacup in the water, with the Yangcheng jar upside down on top. Seal sides with tiles, place stem charcoal on top, and refine with alternating gentle/intense fire for three incense sticks. Cool, open, and scrape the 7-8 qian of medicine from the teacup. Grind and mix with Er Jiang for further refining.
Er Jiang (Second Descent): Shuiyin Mercury (Yi Qian, 1 qian), Zhusha Cinnabar (Yi Qian, 1 qian), Xionghuang Realgar (Yi Wu Qian, 1.5 qian), Pengsha Borax (Er Wu Qian, 2.5 qian), Huoxiao Saltpeter (Yi Er Qian, 1.2 liang), Mingfan White Alum (Er Liang, 2 liang), Zaofan Green Vitriol (Er Liang, 2 liang), Shiyan Salt (Yi Er Qian, 1.2 liang). Mix with previously refined powder, grind together, and refine as before. Mix the result with San Jiang for further refining.
San Jiang (Third Descent): Pengsha Borax (Er Qian, 2 qian), Qingdai Indigo Naturalis (Si Qian, 4 qian), Bai Pi White Arsenic (Yi Wu Qian, 1.5 qian), Shuiyin Mercury (Liu Qian, 6 qian), Mingfan White Alum (Liu Qian, 6 qian). Grind finely with previously refined pills. Refine for three descents. The Ling Dan (Spirit Pill) is complete, snow-white. Do not grind with iron tools. Add Bingpian Borneol (Wu Li, 0.05 qian) and Chansu Toad Venom (Wu Li, 0.05 qian), grind finely, and store in a porcelain jar, sealed. For fistulas and lumps, insert the prepared medicine thread into the toxin. Treats all swellings, back carbuncles, and fistulas, removing necrosis and promoting new growth with immediate effect.
Wu Se Ling Yao (Five-Colored Spirit Medicine): Shiyan Salt (Wu Qian, 5 qian), Heiqian Black Lead (Liu Qian, 6 qian), Ku Zao Fan Calcined Green Vitriol, Ku Baifan Calcined White Alum, Shuiyin Mercury, Huoxiao Saltpeter (each Er Liang, 2 liang). Melt salt and lead, add mercury to form sand-like grains. Add the two alums and saltpeter, stir-fry until dry, grind finely. Add lead and mercury, grind again until no specks remain. Place in a jar, seal with salt mud, refine for three incense sticks (not too long), and let stand overnight. The result is snow-white, approx. 2 liang, representing perfect heat control. For purple color, add Liuhuang Sulfur (Wu Qian, 5 qian). For yellow, add Ming Xionghuang Realgar (Wu Qian, 5 qian). For red, use Heiqian Black Lead (Jiu Qian, 9 qian), Shuiyin Mercury (Yi Liang, 1 liang), Ku Baifan Calcined White Alum (Er Liang, 2 liang), Huoxiao Saltpeter (San Liang, 3 liang), Chen Sha Cinnabar (Si Qian, 4 qian), Ming Xionghuang Realgar (San Qian, 3 qian). Refining heat follows previous methods. For spirit pills, saltpeter must be dry-roasted, and alum calcined. One method uses liquor to boil dry and roast before grinding. Another method doubles the gypsum content, mixes well, re-enters a new jar, refines for one incense stick, and results in a non-painful preparation. This Five-Colored Spirit Medicine is excellent for ulcers/carbuncles that have ruptured but retain residual necrosis and lack new flesh growth; sprinkling it is best.
Sheng Da Ling Yao Gu Guan Fa (Method for Securing Jars for Ascending/Beating Spirit Pills): Heat a Yangcheng jar. Rub crushed garlic all over the exterior multiple times (3-4 times).
