Carbuncle of Hegu (LI4), commonly known as "Hukou Baiya". This condition often presents with the emergence of nodular blisters, or sometimes red threads spreading upwards, hence the name "carbuncle" (Ding Chuang). It is caused by damp-toxin attacking and accumulating in the Hand-Yangming Large Intestine Meridian and Stomach Meridian, resulting in itching, heat, and pain. In the initial stage, puncture the lesion, apply a Chan Su Bing plaster (Toad Venom Cake) to cover it, and sprinkle Jin Huang San (Golden Yellow Powder) over it; after three days, if swelling gathers and suppuration is inevitable, change the plaster. If the swelling becomes soft and painful, pus has formed; pricking it with a needle will lead to recovery. If swelling is severe accompanied by chills and fever, internal and external methods for resolving and supporting must be employed.
Epistaxis (Nosebleed) is caused by excessive fire in the Lung Meridian forcing blood to flow recklessly out through the nasal orifice. Externally, apply Zi Tu San (Purple Earth Powder) to the top of the fontanelle; internally, taking Ling Yang Qing Fei Tang (Antelope Horn Lung-Clearing Decoction) can also stop the bleeding spontaneously.
Ling Yang Qing Fei Tang consists of Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Ou Jie (Nelumbinis Node), Pu Huang (Pollinis Typhae), Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Sheng Di (Rehmanniae Radix), Chuan Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum), etc., along with Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Lu Hui (Aloe), and Bai Mao Gen (Imperatae Rhizoma).
It treats spontaneous continuous epistaxis, as well as ordinary hematemesis (vomiting blood) and hemoptysis (coughing up blood), with efficacy in all cases.
Prescription: Ling Yang Jiao (Capris Cornu, sliced), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Yin Chai Hu (Stellariae Radix), Xuan Shen (Scrophulariae Radix), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Chuan Xiong (Chuanxiong Rhizoma), Dang Gui Shen (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba), Sheng Di (Rehmanniae Radix), Pu Huang (Pollinis Typhae), Di Gu Pi (Lycii Cortex), Shan Zhi (Gardeniae Fructus) (each 1 qian); Lu Hui (Aloe), Gan Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (each 0.5 qian); Ou Jie (Nelumbinis Node) (3 pieces); Bai Mao Gen (Imperatae Rhizoma) (4 liang, crushed for juice, mixed with one bowl of water, squeezed to remove dregs).
Usage: Take one large bowl of Bai Mao Gen juice, decoct until reduced to 7/10 volume, add one cup of Tong Bian (Child's Urine), and take after meals.
Zi Tu San
The treatment with Zi Tu San requires adherence to therapeutic principles and mixing with Huo Jiu (Fire Wine) to a thick consistency.
Apply the medicine to the top of the fontanelle; the blood will naturally stop flowing.
It treats spontaneous continuous epistaxis. Use Zi Tu from a new jar used for pouring silver, grind finely, mix with Huo Jiu, and apply to the fontanelle; the bleeding will stop spontaneously. This is a method of treating from the root.
Bleeding from between the teeth is caused by excess fire attacking upward from the Yangming Stomach Meridian. Another cause is deficiency-fire stirring due to Spleen/Stomach deficiency, rotting the gums, leading to constant oozing of pale blood. For excess fire, use Qing Wei San (Stomach-Clearing Powder), or plug the area with Lian Guo Qiu (Melia Fruit Pouch); for deficiency fire, use Lu Hui Wan (Aloe Pill) and Ren Zhong Bai San (Human Tooth Ash Powder) taken internally or applied externally, which will heal spontaneously.
Qing Wei San
Qing Wei San contains Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum), Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Sheng Di (Rehmanniae Radix); adding Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex) and Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) is beneficial, effectively eliminating excess heat in the Yangming Stomach.
It treats heat in the Stomach Meridian, causing swelling or bleeding of the teeth or gums continuously, with efficacy in all cases.
Prescription: Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix), Huang Lian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Sheng Di (Rehmanniae Radix), Dan Pi (Moutan Cortex), Sheng Ma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma), Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (each 1 qian).
Usage: Two zhong of water, decoct to 8/10 volume, take after meals.
Lian Guo Qiu
Treats bleeding from between the teeth caused by excess fire attacking upward from the Yangming Stomach Meridian.
Usage: Take two fruits of the Melia tree, crush them including flesh and seeds, wrap in silk cotton, first rinse the mouth with warm water to clean away stagnant blood, then insert into the gap between teeth; the bleeding will stop spontaneously.
Lu Hui Wan (Aloe Pill), Ren Zhong Bai San (Human Tooth Ash Powder) (see section on Kou Gan Mouth Ulcers).
