Shenshou Weisheng Tang (Divine Bestowal Health-Preserving Decoction)
The formula of Shenshou Weisheng Tang includes Baizhi (Angelicae Dahuricae Radix), Chuanshanjia (Pangolin Scales), Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix), Ruxiang (Olibanum), Honghua (Carthami Flos), Chenxiang (Aquilariae Lignum Resinatum), and Shijueming (Concha Arcae). Also included are Zaoqiao (Gleditsiae Spina), Qiaoliao (Forsythiae Fructus), Guiwei (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Yinhua (Lonicerae Japonicae Flos), Cao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma), and Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix). Its efficacy is miraculous.
It treats carbuncles, sores, back abscesses (Fabai), brain neck sores (Naoju), opposite mouth sores (Duikou), erysipelas (Danliu), scrofula (Luoli), malignant tetter sores (Dingchuang), wandering phlegm-dampness (Shitan Liuzhu), and all types of surgical sores. If the sore has not yet formed pus, it will dissipate; if pus has already formed, it will ulcerate. It can disperse heat and wind, promote blood circulation to remove stasis, detoxify and reduce swelling, and unblock the zang-fu organs. The medicinal properties are mild, and the effect is rapid; it is indeed the first-choice formula for surgery.
Prescription: Qianghuo (8 fen), Fangfeng, Baizhi, Chuanshanjia (stir-fried with earth and ground), Chenxiang, Honghua, Qiaoliao, Shijueming (calcined, each 6 fen), Yinhua, Zaoqiao, Guiwei, Gancao Jie (Gancao tip), Huafen (each 1 qian), Ruxiang (5 fen), Dahuang (stir-fried with wine, 2 qian; do not use if pulse is deficient or stool is loose).
Usage: Two bowls of water, decoct until eight-tenths remain. For diseases in the upper part, take the medicine first, then drink a cup of wine; for diseases in the lower part, drink a cup of wine first, then take the medicine to promote the medicinal force.

It treats back abscesses (Fabai) and internal abscesses of the five zang organs, various swellings in the sacrum and buttocks, large and small intestine abscesses, anal toxic sores. In the early stage, before pus formation, when hard and painful unbearable, it may be taken.
Prescription: Qingpi, Chenpi, Ruxiang, Moyao, Qiaoliao, Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Danggui, Gancao Jie, Baizhi, Shegan, Huafen, Chuanshanjia, Beimu, Shaoyao, Yinhua, Zaoqiao (each 8 fen), Muxiang (4 fen), Dahuang (2 qian).
Usage: One bowl of water and one bowl of wine, decoct until eight-tenths remain. Take according to the location of the disease (upper/lower) and timing relative to meals.
Neishu Huanglian Tang (Internal Purging Coptis Decoction)
Neishu Huanglian Tang contains Muxiang, Zhizi (Gardeniae Fructus), Gui (Danggui), Qin (Huangqin), Shaoyao, Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Lang (Binglang Areca Seed).

It treats hard swelling of carbuncles and sores, fever with vomiting, constipation, irritability with craving for cold drinks, hiccups, heart vexation, dry tongue and bitter taste, deep and solid pulse. This indicates pathogenic toxin in the zang organs. It is urgent to take this to clear internally, preventing the pathogen from spreading to the meridians.
Prescription: Muxiang, Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma), Zhizi, Danggui, Huangqin, Shaoyao, Bohe, Binglang, Jiegeng, Qiaoliao (each 1 qian), Gancao (5 fen), Dahuang (2 qian).

It treats carbuncles, tetter toxins, opposite mouth sores, parotitis (Fayi), wind-dampness, wind-warmth, wandering phlegm-dampness, deep-bone yin abscesses, crane-knee wind syndrome, left hemiplegia and right paralysis, deviation of mouth and eyes, hemiplegia, qi and blood stagnation, wandering pain on one side, difficult walking, hernia, headache, lockjaw from broken wind, intercepting and resolving wind-cold. All respond effectively.
Prescription: Maozhu (8 liang), Quanxie, Shihu, Ming Tianma, Danggui, Gancao (roasted), Chuanxiong, Qianghuo, Jingjie, Fangfeng, Mahuang, Bei Xixin, Chuanwu (soaked in water, skin removed), Caowu (soaked in water, skin and tip removed), Heshouwu (each 1 liang), Ming Xionghuang (6 qian).
Preparation and Usage: Grind into fine powder, make pills with refined honey the size of bullet seeds. Divide one liang of powder into four, six, or nine pills depending on age and severity. Coat with 6 qian of finely ground Zhusha, store in porcelain jar. For malignant sores starting 2-3 days prior, or abscesses up to 10 days old without pus, presenting like cold damage with headache, thirst, rigidity, aversion to cold, limb pain, nausea, heaviness, confusion, restlessness, high fever: Take one pill dissolved in hot decoction of nine stalks of green onion white parts. Cover with blankets to induce sweating. If sweat is delayed, use green onion soup to induce more. Sweat will follow, patient feels refreshed, disease vanishes. For unformed sores, they dissipate; for formed ones, they swell and suppurate. If no exterior syndrome, dissolve in hot wine. This formula was originally in the Wind Paralysis section; I use it to disperse sore toxins effectively, hence recorded here. Why is it effective for swelling? Sores arise from disharmony of Ying and Wei, qi and blood stagnation. This formula disperses, regulates qi, searches for wind, unblocks meridians. "What is knotted should be opened." Toxin accumulates over time; only sweet-warm and acrid-hot dispersal via sweat can resolve it. "Dispersal does not avoid heat," fitting this formula. Avoid wind after taking, eat congee, avoid cold and sexual activity. Pregnant women should not take.

It treats yin abscess back sores. Initial stage: no pain/swelling, no heat/redness, hard as cowhide, firm as stone. After ten days: fine pulse, cool body, limb fatigue, skin like turtle shell, color like earth vermilion, many millet-like tops, bleeding from pores, flat base, soft depression without pus, skin not rotting, hands warm body cool. Urgently take.

Cover sore with cotton cloth to keep warm. Crucial not to open sore widely initially to prevent leakage of Yuan Qi.
Commentary: Back sores of yin nature result from prior zang-fu damage, preventing internal toxin from venting outward. Old methods include chicken comb blood drops, vinegar-boiled mugwort paste, pig brain hot compress, divine lamp burning. These are for yin abscesses. I used them often but saw little effect. Yin abscesses failing to rise are like rotten tree roots; forcing branches/leaves yields no growth. I use reason-based medication, saving 3-4 in 10. First, loosen soil (Cangzhu, Houpo, Fuling, Chenpi); second, unblock veins (Chuanxiong, Danggui, Zicao, Honghua); third, aid root (Renshen, Huangqi, Gouqi, Yuyu); fourth, return yang (Fuzi, Muxiang, Gancao, Duohuo). If a thread of life remains in the root, survival is possible. Signs of efficacy: warm limbs, sore heats up, swelling begins, pain returns, dark color becomes alive, hardness rots, stomach qi returns. Must respond within three doses for auspiciousness. External methods assist returning yang. This is the general method for yin abscesses.

Preparation and Usage: Grind five ingredients fine. Use 3 fen each time. Wrap in cotton paper to make incense stick, length about one chi. Moisten with true sesame oil, ignite. Hold half cun from sore, circle slowly from outside in. Flame upward, medicinal gas enters, toxin disperses with fire, does not invade viscera. Start with three sticks, increase to 4-5. As sore subsides, apply paste afterwards. If ulcerated with heavy pus discharge, do not smoke/paste, use plaster instead.
