Scalds and Burns, this condition originally has no internal symptoms, all arising from external causes. There are cases where scalding fire is extremely hot, forcing toxic pathogens to attack inward; there are also cases where external injury is exposed to cold and chill, allowing extreme toxins to penetrate deeply into the interior, causing damage and ulceration of the outer skin. Apply Qingliang Ointment (Cooling Ointment) or Yusu Gao (Poppy Shell Ointment) externally. If toxic vapors enter the interior, causing restlessness, dry mouth, and constipation with difficult urination, administer Sishun Qingliang Yin (Four-Obedience Cooling Decoction). If blisters rupture, apply Zhenzhu San (Pearl Powder) topically for spontaneous recovery.
Sishun Qingliang Yin (Four-Obedience Cooling Decoction)
Sishun Qingliang Yin consists of Chi Shao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Fang Feng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Qiang Huo (Rhizoma Notopterygii), Lian Qiao (Fructus Forsythiae), Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), Shan Zhi (Fructus Gardeniae), etc., plus Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei), which eliminates all heat.
It treats scalds and burns where extreme heat forces toxins inward, or where being splashed with cold water causes fire-toxins to attack internally, resulting in restlessness, internal heat, dry mouth, and solid fecal impaction.
Lian Qiao (Fructus Forsythiae), Chi Shao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), Qiang Huo (Rhizoma Notopterygii), Fang Feng (Radix Saposhnikoviae), Dang Gui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis), Shan Zhi (Fructus Gardeniae), Gan Cao (Radix Glycyrrhizae) (each 1 qian), Da Huang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei) (stir-fried, 2 qian).
Take two zhong of water and twenty roots of Deng Xin Cao (Caulis Junci), decoct until eight parts remain, and take after meals.
Yusu Gao (Poppy Shell Ointment)
Yusu Gao treats scalds and burns by boiling Ma You (Sesame Oil) and Bai La (White Beeswax) together.
When it is about to congeal, add Zhen Qing Fen (Calamina), apply to the affected area, and pain will subside.
It treats scalds and burns where skin and flesh are damaged and ulcerated, causing painful heat, blistering, and oozing fluid.
Ma You (Sesame Oil) 4 liang, Ying Su Hua (Flos Papaveris) 15 flowers; if flowers are unavailable, use pods instead. Soak in oil, fry until withered, filter clear. Pour the oil back into a ladle, add Bai Zhan (White Beeswax) 3 qian, melt, and pour into a jar. When the edges are about to congeal, add Zhen Qing Fen (Calamina) fine powder 2 qian, stir evenly, and cool rapidly in water to retrieve. Before use, puncture blisters, pick up ointment with a spatula, melt in the palm, and apply to the affected area. Cover with soft cotton paper and bandage, change twice daily, and pain will stop immediately. The next day, wipe clean necrotic skin with soft silk, reapply, and it will heal spontaneously.
Zhenzhu San (Pearl Powder) (See Xiagan Section)
Treats scalds and burns where necrotic skin has completely fallen off and pain has ceased; applying this powder leads to recovery. In the Zhangchuang Section mentioned earlier, Duan Shi Shui (Water from Calcined Stone) mixed with Ma You (Sesame Oil) to form an ointment is Qingliang Gao (Cooling Ointment), which is also effective for scalds and burns.
