The so-called Lung Abscess (Fei Yong) is a syndrome where Metal suffers from Fire punishment. The Lung serves as the Canopy of the Five Zang Organs, positioned at the highest level, with the purest quality. Internally it governs Qi, centrally governs voice, externally controls skin and hair, and also governs longevity. When Lung Metal is clear and the air passages are deep and long, the voice is naturally crisp, the resonance high, and the sound resonant; these three indicate longevity and smoothness. If Lung Metal is turbid and the air passages short and thin, the voice is naturally parched, the resonance low, and the sound faint; these three indicate premature death and stagnation. Therefore, Lung Metal thrives uniquely in autumn, responding to its light and clear seasonal nature; if suppressed, disease arises. Those suffering from Lung Abscess first contract Wind-Cold which fails to disperse, remaining in the Lung. Initially, symptoms include bristling hair, aversion to wind, cough with heavy voice, hidden pain in the chest and diaphragm, and neck stiffness preventing turning; these are the true signs. Over time, clear nasal discharge occurs, pus and sputum are expectorated, yellow and foul-smelling, even with chest and hypochondriac distension, difficult breathing, reduced appetite, surging pulse, and spontaneous sweating. The method should employ Qingjin Ganjie Tang (Clear Metal Licorice and Platycodon Decoction) as the main formula, regulated by Maidong Qingfei Yin (Ophiopogon Lung-Clearing Infusion). There are also cases of chronic cough due to labor injury, expectorating blood-stained sputum, alternating chills and fever, emaciation, spitting of stasis-pus, hoarseness, and sore throat; this condition transmits into Lung Flaccidity (Fei Wei), a disease with only one chance of survival out of a hundred. Treatment suits Zhimu Fuling Tang (Anemarrhena and Poria Decoction) as the main formula, regulated by Renshen Wuweizi Tang (Ginseng and Schisandra Decoction). There are also cases where Seven Emotions, hunger/fullness, or labor injure the Spleen and Lung, treated with Maidong Pingfei Yin (Ophiopogon Level-Lung Infusion) as the main formula, regulated by Ziwan Ru Tang (Aster and Asarum Decoction). There are also cases of sexual exhaustion injuring the Kidney Water via Dan-Shi tonics, suited for Shenqi Wan (Kidney Qi Pill) as the main formula, regulated by Jinye Wutu Dan (Golden Fluid Earth-Earth Pill). There are also cases of internal injury from labor, whistling in the wind, external Cold invasion failing to resolve leading to Lung Abscess; initially presenting with floating and slightly rapid pulse, chest heat, coarse breath, alternating chills and fever, cough with phlegm, treated with Xiaoqinglong Tang (Minor Green Dragon Decoction) as the main formula, regulated by Maidong Qingfei Yin. Generally, Jinyi Tang (Gold Carp Decoction), Lafan Wan (Beeswax and Alum Pill), and Taiyi Gao (Supreme Paste) taken alternately are also effective. However, if palm skin becomes rough, six pulses are surging and rapid, breath急促 with malar flush, expectoration of foul pus and white blood, vomiting of clear water, nasal flaring, and refusal to eat, all are incurable. This condition, if body temperature is cool, pulse is fine, pus and blood flow freely, sputum color is bright, appetite returns, and pus/blood gradually cease, are all harmless; the reverse indicates death.
