For minor carbuncles and furuncles, when the swelling has just begun but pus has not yet formed, plaster should not be applied. Take the sharp tip of raw deer horn (Lu Jiao Jian), place it in a mortar, and grind it thickly with aged rice vinegar. Apply the resulting liquid to the periphery of the furuncle using a goose feather, leaving the center uncovered. Reapply when dry; within one or two days, the swelling will resolve internally.
Another prescription: Stir-fry Evodiae Fructus (Wu Zhu Yu) slightly until fragrant, then grind into a fine powder. Mix with egg white and apply to the affected area. This is highly effective.
For minor carbuncles and furuncles accompanied by pain and fever, use the nodes of raw Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Fen Cao Jie). Do not roast or bake; simply dry them in the sun. If sunny days are unavailable, dry them gently over a warming oven. Grind into a fine powder. Take 1-2 qian mixed with hot wine. After several doses, both pain and fever will cease. If slight chills are felt, suggesting the potential onset of a back carbuncle, or if sores, swellings, or urticaria have appeared, take 3 liang of Natrii Sulfas (Xiao Shi), dissolve it in one sheng of warm water. Once cooled, fold an old blue cloth three times, place it over the red and swollen area, and apply as a wet compress. Replace frequently while it feels hot; recovery will be immediate.
Take one piece of Lead (Hei Qian) and 3 liang of Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao). Lightly roast the licorice and chop it. Place one dou of wine in a porcelain bottle. Melt the lead and pour it into the wine. Remove the wine and store it in another bottle. Retrieve the lead and repeat the melting and pouring process nine times. Finally, discard the lead and licorice. Let the patient drink this wine until intoxicated and asleep; the illness will be cured.
Another prescription: Use 3 liang of Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gan Cao), crush it raw into a powder. Mix thoroughly with flour from large barley (Da Mai Mian) in a wide basin. Add a small amount of high-quality butter (Su) separately kneaded into the mixture. Knead into cakes using boiling water. The cake should be slightly larger than the sore. Apply as a hot compress to the swelling. Use thin slices and old paper as barriers to allow ventilation. Replace when cool. If pus has formed, it will discharge spontaneously; if not, the swelling will resolve internally.
Cut off the top of a winter melon (Dong Gua) and apply it to the sore. As the melon rots, cut away the rotten part and reapply. Before the melon is exhausted, the sore will have shrunk significantly. Then, apply a plaster for maintenance.
Another prescription: Take a single-clove garlic (Du Tou Da Suan), finely pound both ends. Grind with sesame oil (Ma Zi You) until uniform. Apply thickly to the sore; replace when dry. Alternatively, pound fresh Boehmeriae Caulis (Zhu Gen) until mushy and apply to the area.
Pound raw Phytolaccae Radix (Shang Lu) until soft and apply to the affected area; replace when dry.
Grind deer horn (Lu Jiao) in a mortar to extract white juice and apply to the lesion. Reapply when dry. Avoid contact with hands. Have someone suck out the yellow fluid. The condition will dissipate in about one day.
