A patient suffered from abdominal pain, which worsened after eating hot food. Various medicines were ineffective. Half a year later, the abdomen became more swollen, the complexion was sallow and withered, and the pulse was neither surging nor slippery; it was not an abscess (Yong). Upon inquiry, it was learned that initially, due to extreme thirst, he bent down to drink stream water, and it was suspected that he had accidentally swallowed a leech (Shuizhi). He was instructed to take yellow mud pills, administered with water on an empty stomach, one hundred pills at a time. Indeed, leeches were discharged, and he recovered.
Another child suffered from abdominal pain after falling into a ditch. Medicines for fright and accumulation were ineffective. He was also treated according to the previous method and recovered.
A person had insects enter his ear during sleep, causing pain and dizziness (Mao). Ginger was rubbed against a cat's nose, causing its urine to flow naturally. The cat urine was dripped into the ear, and the insect came out.
Another person had sores growing in the ear, causing intermittent severe pain, almost to death, but returning to normal when the pain ceased. The pulse was calm and peaceful, indicating it was not a sore. During conversation, the pain suddenly flared up. I suspected an insect had entered the ear and urgently dripped cat urine into the ear. Indeed, a stink bug was discharged, and the pain ceased. Alternatively, dripping sesame oil would kill the insect but make it difficult to remove. Or, sleeping on roasted sesame seeds (Zhimazhima) could also expel the insect, but not as quickly as cat urine.
If the pulse is floating (Fu), dispelling wind is the primary treatment, supplemented by tonifying Qi.
If the pulse is choppy (Se), dispelling wind is the primary treatment, supplemented by nourishing Blood.
If the pulse is both floating and choppy, dispel wind while nourishing Qi and Blood.
A woman suffered from itching of this condition, with five-center heat (Wuxin Fanre). After several doses of Xiaoyao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder), the symptoms stopped. She then took Renshen Jingjie San (Ginseng and Schizonepeta Powder) for over twenty doses and recovered.
A woman had whole-body itching, worse in autumn and winter. Her pulse was floating and rapid. She drank Xiaofeng San (Wind-Dispersing Powder) and applied Shexiangzi San (Cnidium Powder) externally. After several months, she recovered completely.
A woman had redness all over her body. Scratching caused sores with continuous pus discharge. She recovered using Danggui Yinzi (Angelica Decoction) and external application of Shexiangzi San.
An elderly woman had whole-body itching, worsening before noon. She was stabilized using Sijunzi Tang (Four Gentlemen Decoction) added with Jingjie (Schizonepeta), Fangfeng (Saposhnikovia), Chuanxiong (Ligusticum), and Danggui (Angelica).
A woman developed head swelling and itching after washing her hair. She recovered after several doses of Renshen Jingjie San.
A woman developed sores from itching. Even after a long time, the affected area remained itchy, scratching produced white scales. After several doses of Sisheng San (Four Living Substances Powder), the itching stopped. She then took Renshen Jingjie San for over twenty doses and recovered.
A man had whole-body itching, unresponsive to various medicines. His pulse was floating, and deep pressure revealed a choppy quality. Treatment focused on generating Blood, interspersed with tonifying Qi. After over a hundred doses, he recovered. (This diagnosis relied on the pulse.)
A child suffered from urticaria (Yinzhen), with itching, fever, and restlessness. Treated with Xiaofeng San.
Another child suffered from the same condition, accompanied by cough and frequent vomiting. Recovered using Gegen Jupi Tang (Pueraria and Tangerine Peel Decoction).
A woman suffered from wind wheals resembling tinea for three years without recovery. She had five-center heat, a surging pulse that became choppy upon deep pressure. This is a Blood deficiency syndrome. Treatment focused on generating Blood. If one solely attacks wind toxicity, Blood becomes more deficient and Heat more blazing. The Blood being scorched leads to scrofula (Luoli) or consumptive disease (Qiezheng). Thus, she took Xiaoyao San for several doses, and Renshen Jingjie San for over twenty doses, recovering. (This diagnosis relied on pulse and symptoms.)
A woman had whole-body itching, worsening in autumn and winter. Her pulse was floating and rapid. This is Wind pathogen lodging in the skin, named Xuefeng Zhen (Blood Wind Rash). She drank Xiaofeng San and applied Shexiangzi San externally for slight relief, then took Siwu Tang (Four Substances Decoction) added with Jingjie and Fangfeng for several doses, recovering. (This diagnosis relied on pulse and symptoms.)
Another woman suffered from this condition, worse in summer. Her pulse was surging and large. She used Heshouwu San (Polygonum Multiflorum Powder).
A woman suffered from red scars with itching. Scratching broke the skin into sores with fluid discharge, lasting a long time without healing. Internal use of Danggui Yin and external application of Shexiangzi San led to recovery.
Another woman suffered from this condition, unresponsive to various medicines. She recovered after several doses of Sisheng San.
Generally, women have weak constitutions. When Wind pathogen lodges in the skin, white rashes form. When Cold-Dampness lodges in muscles, constrained Heat forms red rashes. Although the colors differ, the treatment is the same. One must not lie exposed or bathe when sweating. The Classic states: "Sweating exposed to dampness generates acne and prickly heat." Leigong said: "For whole-body wind rash, mix raw cypress [bark/wood] with wine..." (Text cuts off here).
A man, every autumn and winter, develops red spots like scars all over the body, causing itching. This is because Cold Qi constricts the interstices (Couli), preventing Yang Qi from venting, leading to internal stagnation and agitation. Ren Shen Bai Du San (Ginseng and Imperata Powder) was used to disperse exterior pathogens, followed by Buzhong Yiqi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction) to secure the exterior and tonify Qi. He believed it was Heat toxicity and self-medicated with cold medicines, worsening the condition. Upon reconsultation, the previous decoction was used again with Fuling (Poria), Banxia (Pinellia), and Qianghuo (Notopterygium) for four doses, followed by Buzhong Yiqi Tang, leading to recovery. (This diagnosis relied on symptoms.)
Hejian (Liu Wansu) stated: Sores and swellings arise from internal Heat and external deficiency, attacked by Wind-Dampness. The Lung governs skin and hair; the Spleen governs muscles. Lung Qi deficiency opens the interstices, allowing Wind invasion. Spleen Dampness with internal Heat generates sores. Swellings are caused by Cold-Heat toxic factors lodging in meridians, causing Blood stasis and congestion forming swellings. Those caused by internal Wind action have no head or root. Those caused by contending Qi and Blood have a head and root. Red nodular swellings result from Wind-Heat flowing and gathering. Sores with pain indicate Excess; itching indicates Deficiency. Deficiency does not mean Cold, but rather the degree of Heat intensity.
Maifan Shi Gao (Maifan Stone Gypsum) is miraculous for treating various carbuncles and ulcers.
Maifan Shi Gao, regardless of quantity, is fired in charcoal fire until red-hot, then quenched in good rice vinegar. Repeat quenching ten or more times, grind into powder, sieve to remove coarse particles and keep fine powder. Place in a mortar. Several people take turns grinding for five to seven days until extremely fine, like flour. Bailian (Belamcanda Rhizome) is ground into fine powder. Lujiao (Deer Antler) should not be shed naturally; select fresh antlers with the brain cap bone intact, cut into 2-3 inch lengths, burn in charcoal until smoke ceases, grind into powder, place in mortar, and grind thoroughly until very fine.
Take two taels of fine Maifan Shi Gao powder, two taels of Bailian powder, and four taels of Lujiao Hui (Deer Antler Ash). It is crucial to grind them extremely fine for efficacy. Coarseness causes harm; fineness greatly relieves pain, promotes wound closure, and drains pus. Mix appropriate amounts of medicine. Use aged rice vinegar in a silver or ceramic vessel, boil until bubbles resemble fish eyes, then gradually add the powder. Stir constantly with a bamboo stick for one to two hours until the consistency is appropriate. Remove and store in a ceramic jar. Cover with paper when cool to prevent dust. Before use, wash the wound with pig trotter soup to remove pus and blood, dry with old cloth, and apply the ointment around the wound with a goose feather, covering all red areas except a central spot the size of a coin. If unruptured, it promotes internal resolution; if ruptured, it drains pus like rushing water. The wound closes daily. For chronic sores with rotting muscle and exposed bone, apply medicine-soaked old cloth patches. As long as the inner membrane is not perforated, safety can be achieved. Do not touch tender flesh with hands when washing, nor blow on it with breath. Avoid people with axillary odor or menstruating/pregnant women seeing the preparation process. Boil another bowl of good rice vinegar, store in a ceramic jar. Apply medicine to the wound daily; if the medicine dries, moisten it with vinegar using a goose feather to prevent cracking. Initially, wash and change medicine once daily; after ten days, change every two days. Ancient texts state: Maifan Shi is yellow-white like rice balls, those used as millstones are best. Note: Maifan Shi should not be used as a millstone; it resembles rice balls with raw grains. If unavailable, stones near the teeth of old millstones can substitute, as they possess wheat properties. White stones found in streams, sized like beans or rice grains, are also suitable. Stones vary in size, some fist-sized, some goose-egg-sized, roughly gathered in hand.
This formula was secretly transmitted by Lü Xihua in ancient times. Even close relatives could not obtain it. Pei Yuanwai bribed with official rank, and the Henan Prefect threatened with heavy punishment, yet he died without transmitting it. Gentlemen criticize his narrow-mindedness but find it forgivable. Modern physicians often devise deceptive schemes to hide effective formulas, preventing their reuse, a crime beyond forgiveness. Zhao Yin, magistrate of Longquan, traveled swiftly on horseback. Shortly after taking office, he suffered severe epistaxis (Bixue), losing several sheng of blood daily. A physician advised drinking lotus root juice and Rehmannia paste. Zhao said: Last year, due to fatigue and heat contraction, I suffered this. I consulted famous doctors, took medicine, and recovered. Before parting, the doctor warned: If it recurs, do not trust doctors prescribing raw Rehmannia and lotus root juice, as they chill the Spleen and Stomach, making it incurable. Therefore, for half a month, multiple doctors failed. The former physician secretly prepared the lotus root juice and Rehmannia paste, which cured him immediately. Zhao asked: Thank you for the gift. Its taste is similar to what I took initially. Is it the same formula? The physician replied: It is the same lotus root juice and Rehmannia paste offered previously. Zhao exclaimed: Did the physician deceive me with a trick? Had I believed this formula earlier, I would have spared myself much suffering.
