I. If a copper coin is accidentally swallowed, consuming many water chestnuts (Dioscorea esculenta) can soften the hard object, allowing it to be passed out through the stool. Another method involves consuming many walnuts (Juglans regia) to facilitate its natural dissolution and expulsion. (The fact that walnuts and copper coins become powder when eaten together serves as evidence.)
II. If ironware, bones, or similar objects are accidentally swallowed and cause a sensation of heaviness or dropping in the intestines because they cannot move downward, consuming plenty of green vegetables and lard (pig fat) can help push them into the large intestine for elimination with feces, which is highly effective.
III. Regarding the accidental swallowing of gold: In the past, Jiang Yingsu treated a patient surnamed Wang who, due to fear after offending the salt administration official, swallowed one or two qian of gold. The patient suffered from mental confusion and restlessness, with no solution in sight. Recalling that silversmiths use borax (Borax) to melt gold, he hastily purchased four qian of borax, ground it into powder, and took it in two doses mixed with rice gruel. Shortly thereafter, Chengqi Tang (Cassia Decoction) was decocted and administered to induce purgation. The borax wrapped around the gold, and it was expelled through the stool. For those who have accidentally ingested gold dust but are not yet dead, administering duck blood can save their lives.
IV. Regarding the accidental swallowing of an iron nail: Mr. Zhang Jingyue once treated the son of a family surnamed Wang, who was just one year old. His mother gave him an iron nail to play with, and he inadvertently swallowed it, creating a critical situation. Mr. Zhang informed the family, "Is there any way to retrieve a suspended nail without endangering life?" He then instructed them to hold the child upright. A cry was heard, indicating the nail had passed the throat and entered the esophagus/stomach. The father said, "How can such delicate internal organs withstand this?" Moved by the father's desperate pleas, Mr. Zhang comforted him but, lacking an immediate solution despite repeated urgent requests for a prescription, sat quietly in his study to think deeply. Still finding no answer, he picked up the Bencao (Materia Medica) to seek inspiration. He noticed the entry stating, "Needles are feared by Mirabilite." This suddenly inspired a formula. He used one qian of active lodestone (Magnetitum) and two qian of mirabilite (Natrii Sulfas), grinding them together into a fine powder. He gave this to the father, instructing him to mix the powder with boiled lard and honey, and feed it to the child, ensuring complete ingestion between 3 PM and 5 PM (Shen-Wei hours). The next morning, the father crawled before the steps saying, "Yesterday at midnight, I passed an object about the size of a taro root, crystal clear like cabbage, smooth and lubricated without sharp edges. The medicine coated the outside; upon inspection, the nail was inside. It was a mushroom-headed nail used in shoe-making in the capital." Essentially, mirabilite alone cannot make the medicine adhere to the nail, nor can lodestone alone rapidly expel the nail. Without oil, there is no lubrication; without honey, swallowing may be difficult. Combining these four elements allows the adhering agent to stick, the expelling agent to drive, and the lubricant to ease passage, working synergistically to wrap and expel the foreign body.
