Generally speaking, ying and liu (goiter and tumor) are all formed due to the stagnation of Qi and blood, leading to accumulation. Ying disease is mostly caused by worry and indignation, often occurring in the shoulder and neck area, with loose and non-tight skin that hangs down when beaten. Liu disease arises from the retention of Qi; initially resembling a plum or apricot, the skin is tender and shiny, gradually enlarging to the size of a cup or egg. There are five types of ying: those with unchanged flesh color are called Rou Ying (Flesh Goiter); those with exposed tendons and vessels are called Jin Ying (Tendon Goiter); those with intersecting red veins are called Xue Ying (Blood Goiter); those that fluctuate with emotional distress are called Qi Ying (Qi Goiter); and those that are hard and immobile are called Shi Ying (Stone Goiter). There are also six types of liu: Gu Liu (Bone Tumor), Zhi Liu (Fat Tumor), Rou Liu (Flesh Tumor), Nong Liu (Pus Tumor), Xue Liu (Blood Tumor), and Shi Liu (Stone Tumor). Although ying and liu are neither painful nor itchy, they must never be incised or ruptured, lest pus and blood collapse and leak endlessly, inevitably leading to death. Rou Liu cannot be treated with attacking methods. For conditions such as Zhi Liu and Qi Ying, herbs with the property of softening hardness and dissipating nodules, such as Haizao (Sargassum Herba) and Kunbu (Laminariae Thallus), should be used. Dongyuan's Sanzhong Kuijian Tang (Decoction for Dispersing Swelling and Hardness) can also be taken frequently to achieve resolution.
