Postpartum "Rulao" (chronic debility after childbirth) is generally caused by the short time elapsed since delivery, resulting in deficiency of blood and qi, incomplete recovery of diet, and a duration of less than one month. The blood and qi are depleted, and improper nursing combined with wind-pathogen invasion leads to the condition. When treating postpartum Rulao, if symptoms such as aversion to cold, high fever, soreness and pain in the four limbs, headache, and irritability occur, use Huang San Formula.
Huangqi (Radix Astragali) (1 liang, crushed) Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi) (0.5 liang) Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) (0.5 liang, crushed and lightly stir-fried) Sangjisheng (Ramulus Taxilli) (0.5 liang) Baifuling (Poria) (0.5 liang) Baishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) (decored, dried) Biejia (Carapax et Plastrum Testudinis) (3 liang, brushed with vinegar and roasted, remove skirt).
The above herbs are pounded into coarse powder. For each dose, take 4 qian, using one pair of pig kidneys, removing the fatty membrane. First, add one da zhan (approx. 200ml) of water, 0.5 fen of fresh ginger, and three jujubes. Decoct until reduced to 0.6 volume, strain, and take warm.
Treating postpartum Rulao is due to physical weakness and incomplete recovery of strength, exacerbated by labor. Symptoms include vexatious pain in the four limbs, intermittent chills and fever, and loss of appetite. Use Shugan Dihuang San Formula.
Shugan Dihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) Renshen (Radix Ginseng) (remove rhizome) Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) Baishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) Baifuling (Poria) (each 1 liang) Xuduan (Radix Dipsaci) Huangqi (Radix Astragali) (crushed) Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi).
The above herbs are pounded and sifted into a powder. For each dose, take 4 qian, using one zhong zhan (approx. 150ml) of water, 0.5 fen of fresh ginger, and three jujubes. Decoct until reduced to 0.6 volume, strain, and take warm at any time.
Treating postpartum Rulao with deficiency and emaciation, alternating chills and fever, pain in the heart and abdomen, weakness in the four limbs, and loss of appetite, use Baizhu San Formula.
Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) (1 liang) Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae) (0.5 liang) Shugan Dihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix) (1 liang) Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis) (0.5 liang, processed until cracked, crushed) Baishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) (0.3 liang) Xiong (Radix Chuanxiong) (0.5 liang) Huangqi (Radix Astragali) (0.3 liang, crushed).
The above herbs are pounded into coarse powder. For each dose, take 4 qian, using one zhong zhan (approx. 150ml) of water, 0.5 fen of fresh ginger, and three jujubes. Decoct until reduced to 0.6 volume, strain, and take slightly warm. Take three to four times a day.
Treating postpartum physical weakness with alternating chills and fever, resembling malaria, named Rulao, use Zhushen Tang Formula.
Zhushen (Porcine Kidney) (one pair, remove fatty membrane) Xiangchi (Fermented Soybean) (0.5 liang) Baijingmi (Oryza Sativa) (0.5 liang) Congbai (Scallion White) (7 cun, cut) Xiebai (Bulbus Allii Macrostemonis) (three stems, cut) Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) (0.3 liang) Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) (0.3 liang).
The above herbs are pounded into coarse powder. For each dose, take 0.5 liang, add to the decoction of the previous ingredients, and decoct until reduced to 0.7 volume. Strain and take before meals, divided into two warm doses.
Treating postpartum Rulao with vexatious heat in the mind and spirit, headache, dry mouth, and alternating chills and fever in the body, use Shenli Tang Formula.
Zhushen (Porcine Kidney) (one pair, remove fatty membrane) Chi (Fermented Soybean) (0.5 liang) Dazao (Jujube) (four pieces, split) Shengjiang (Fresh Ginger) (1 liang, cut) Congbai (Scallion White) (three small stems, cut) Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis) (decored, dried).
The above herbs are pounded into coarse powder. For each dose, take 0.5 liang, add to the decoction of the previous ingredients, and decoct until reduced to 0.7 volume. Strain and take before meals, divided into two warm doses.
Treating postpartum Rulao, likely due to short time since delivery, prolonged sitting, excessive talking, and physical exertion, leading to pain in the head, eyes, and four limbs, and chills and fever resembling malaria, use Baifu San Formula.
Baifuling (Poria) (1 liang) Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) (crushed, lightly stir-fried) Baishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) Xiong (Radix Chuanxiong) Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi) Huangqi (Radix Astragali) (crushed) Renshen (Radix Ginseng) (remove rhizome) Shugan Dihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix).
The above herbs are pounded and sifted into a powder. For each dose, first use one and a half da zhan (approx. 300ml) of water, add one pair of pig kidneys, finely chopped after removing the fatty membrane, 0.5 fen of fresh ginger, and three jujubes. Decoct until reduced to 0.6 volume, strain, and take warm.
Treating postpartum Rulao with advancing and retreating chills and fever, headache, dizziness, soreness and pain in all joints, and weak strength, use Huang Wan Formula.
Huangqi (Radix Astragali) (1 liang, crushed) Baishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Alba) (0.3 liang) Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis) (1 liang, crushed, lightly stir-fried) Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi) (0.3 liang) Baiziren (Semen Platycladi) (0.3 liang) Xuduan (Radix Dipsaci) (0.3 liang, remove seedlings) Baizhu (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae) (0.3 liang).
