The toxic pathogenic factors of Cold Damage (Shanghan) fail to dissipate. Heat and irritability in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner) injure the Lung. The Lung governs Qi; when evil heat stagnates, the Lung becomes distended due to deficiency, and the Defensive Qi (Wei Qi) fails to circulate freely. Thus, upper Qi rebellion (asthma/wheezing) occurs.
For Cold Damage complicated by Qi stagnation in the Heart and Lungs, presenting with thick and sticky nasal discharge and saliva, chest and hypochondriac fullness, and upper Qi rebellion with panting, the Maidong San (Ophiopogon Powder) is indicated.
Maidong (Radix Ophiopogonis), 1 liang, heart removed; Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), 0.5 liang, honey-fried until slightly red and crushed; Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), 3 qian, washed seven times with decoction to remove slipperiness; Ziwan (Herba Asteris Tatarici), 3 qian, washed to remove seedlings and soil; Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), 0.5 liang, soaked in water and processed.
Crush and sieve the above ingredients to make a powder. Take 5 qian per dose. Add 1 large cup of water, 0.5 fen of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), and 1 fen of Danzhuru (Caulis Bambusae in Taeniam). Decoct until 0.5 cup remains, strain, and take warm at any time.
For Cold Damage causing upper Qi rebellion with panting and inability to sleep, this formula is suitable.
Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae), 2 liang, root nodes removed; Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), 0.5 liang, honey-fried until slightly red and crushed; Ziwan (Herba Asteris Tatarici), 1 liang, washed to remove seedlings and soil; Beimu (Bulbus Fritillariae Cirrhosae), 1.5 liang, roasted until slightly yellow; Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum), 1 liang, soaked in water, skin and tips removed, double-kernel bran-fried until slightly yellow; Zisuzi (Fructus Perillae), 1 liang, lightly fried.
Crush and sieve the above ingredients to make a powder. Take 5 qian per dose. Add 1 large cup of water and 0.5 fen of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens). Decoct until 0.5 cup remains, strain, and take warm at any time.
For Cold Damage causing empty distension in the abdomen and hypochondrium, upper Qi rebellion with dry throat, and a floating pulse, indicating Water-Qi accumulation below the Heart, the Chifuling San (Red Poria Powder) is indicated.
Chifuling (Poria Cum Radice), 1 liang; Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae), 1.5 liang, root nodes removed; Chishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), 1 liang; Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), 1.5 liang, soaked in water and washed seven times to remove slipperiness; Xixin (Radix et Rhizoma Asari), 3 qian; Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi), 3 qian; Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis), 1 liang; Helilezi (Fructus Chebulae Retardatae), 1 liang; Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori Radicis), 1.5 liang, crushed.
Crush and sieve the above ingredients to make a powder. Take 5 qian per dose. Add 1 large cup of water and 0.5 fen of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens). Decoct until 0.5 cup remains, strain, and take warm at any time.
For Cold Damage causing variable phlegm and saliva, upper Qi rebellion with急促 panting, chest fullness, restlessness in sitting or lying, and slight swelling of the face and eyes, the Sangbaipi San (Mulberry Root Bark Powder) is indicated.
Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori Radicis), 1 liang, crushed; Chifuling (Poria Cum Radice), 3 qian; Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), 3 qian, washed seven times with decoction to remove slipperiness; Xuanfuhua (Capitium Inulae), 1 liang; Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), 3 liang [text incomplete]; Ziwan (Herba Asteris Tatarici), 3 qian, washed to remove seedlings [text incomplete].
Crush and sieve the above ingredients to make a powder. Take 5 qian per dose. Add 1 large cup of water, 0.5 fen of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens), and 3 dates. Decoct until 0.5 cup remains, strain, and take warm at any time.
For Cold Damage causing upper Qi rebellion with急促 panting and chest/heart fullness, this formula is suitable.
Zisuzi (Fructus Perillae), 1 he, lightly fried; Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae), 1 liang, root nodes removed; Binglang (Semen Arecae), 1 liang; Chenpi (Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae), 1 liang, soaked in water, white pith removed, dried; Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum), 1 liang, soaked in water, skin and tips removed, double-kernel bran-fried until slightly yellow; Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae), 0.5 liang, honey-fried until slightly red and crushed.
Crush and sieve the above ingredients to make a powder. Take 5 qian per dose. Add 1 large cup of water and 0.5 fen of Shengjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens). Decoct until 0.5 cup remains, strain, and take warm at any time.
For Cold Damage causing Qi stagnation, discomfort in the heart and abdomen, upper Qi rebellion with cough, and abdominal/hypochondriac oppression, the Helile Wan (Chebula Pill) is indicated.
Helilepi (Exocarpium Chebulae), 1 liang; Dafupi (Pericarpium Arecae Fructus), 1 liang, crushed; Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), 1 liang, washed seven times with decoction to remove slipperiness; Sangbaipi (Cortex Mori Radicis), 1 liang, crushed; Qianhu (Radix Peucedani), [text incomplete]; Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum), [text incomplete].
Grind the above ingredients into powder. Add Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum) and Tinglizi (Semen Lepidii seu Descurainiae), and grind again until uniform. Mix with refined honey and pound 200-300 times. Form pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take 20 pills per dose at any time, washed down with Ginger Decoction.
For Cold Damage causing poor circulation in the heart and chest, upper Qi rebellion with panting, and abdominal/hypochondriac oppression, the Binglang Wan (Areca Nut Pill) is indicated.
Binglang (Semen Arecae), 1 liang; Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae), 0.5 liang; Helilepi (Exocarpium Chebulae), 1 liang; Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi), 3 qian; Mutong (Caulis Akebiae seu Trichosanthis), 0.5 liang, crushed; Zhike (Fructus Aurantii), 0.5 liang, bran-fried until slightly yellow, pith removed; Renshen (Radix Ginseng), 0.5 liang, radicle removed; Chishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra), 3 qian; Banxia (Rhizoma Pinelliae), 0.5 liang, washed seven times with decoction to remove slipperiness.
Grind the above ingredients into powder. Mix with refined honey and pound 200-300 times. Form pills the size of Sophora seeds. Take 20 pills per dose at any time, washed down with Ginger Decoction.
