If the disease of cold damage (Shanghan) has not resolved by the eighth day, it may be due to the re-invasion of pathogens into the various Yin and Yang meridians, or because the toxic heat (Du Wa) was not completely cleared after sweating, emesis, or purgation therapies. Therefore, the symptoms persist.
For cold damage on the eighth day, with severe fever, dry and difficult defecation, epigastric and abdominal fullness and stagnation, inability to ingest food and drink, mental confusion, and delirious speech, the Biejia Powder is indicated.
Ingredients: Bie Jia (Testudinis Carapax et Plastrum, 1 liang, coated with vinegar and roasted until slightly yellow, remove the skirt); Xixin (Asari Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang); Wuzhuyu (Evodiae Fructus, 3 qian, soaked in water seven times, dried, and lightly roasted); Baixianpi (Dictamni Cortex, 1 liang).
Process the above ingredients by crushing and sieving into a powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add one zhong zhan of water and half a fen of fresh ginger. Decoct until reduced to six parts. Strain and take warm at any time. The effect is considered adequate if mild diarrhea occurs.
For cold damage on the eighth day, with persistent irritability and heat, and pain in the four limbs, the Xijiao Powder is indicated.
Ingredients: Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, 1 liang); Chuan Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma, 1.5 liang); Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, 1.5 liang, remove the radix tip); Gegen (Puerariae Radix, 1.5 liang, cut into small pieces); Wu Lan (Isatidis Folium, 1 liang); Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang, roasted until slightly red and cut into small pieces).
Process the above ingredients by crushing and sieving into a powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add one zhong zhan of water. Decoct until reduced to six parts. Strain. Then add Mayaxiao (Natrii Sulfas, 2 qian). Boil for two or three boils. Take warm at any time.
Another prescription.
Ingredients: Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, 1 liang, remove the radix tip); Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 1 liang); Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu, 3 qian); Fushen (Poria cum Radix Pinelli, 3 qian); Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 1 liang, remove the rhizome); Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 liang, roasted until slightly red and cut into small pieces).
Process the above ingredients by crushing and sieving into a powder. Take 5 qian per dose. Add one da zhan of water. Decoct until reduced to seven parts. Strain. Add Puxiao (Natrii Sulfas, 2 qian). Boil for two or three boils. Take warm in two divided doses at any time.
For cold damage unresolved after eight days, characterized by silence and inner vexation, dryness in the abdomen, dry and difficult defecation in the large intestine, and manic speech, the Chaihu Powder is indicated.
Ingredients: Chaihu (Bupleuri Radix, 1 liang, remove the radix tip); Chi Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra, 0.5 liang); Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, 0.5 liang); Renshen (Ginseng Radix, 1 liang, remove the rhizome); Chuan Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang, cut into small pieces and lightly roasted); Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, 0.5 liang, roasted until slightly red and cut into small pieces); Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, 0.5 liang, soaked in water seven times to remove slipperiness); Weirui (Polygonati Odorati Rhizoma, 0.5 liang); Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix, 0.5 liang).
Process the above ingredients by crushing and sieving into a powder. Take 5 qian per dose. Add one da zhan of water and half a fen of fresh ginger. Decoct until reduced to five parts. Strain and take warm at any time. The effect is considered adequate if mild diarrhea occurs.
For cold damage on the eighth day, where wind-dampness combats each other, causing body pain and vexation, inability to turn over independently, no vomiting, no thirst, and if the pulse becomes floating after erroneous purgation, the Fuzi Tang is indicated.
