The heat-toxin of Cold Damage (Shanghan) fails to subside, lingering and stagnating within the Zang-Fu organs without dissipating. It then attacks the exterior. Following the waxing and waning of the body's righteous Qi, it manifests as alternating episodes of fever and remission. The entire body experiences high fever, which fluctuates in intensity, hence it is termed "Tidal Fever" (Chao Re). Upon pulse diagnosis, one should observe the Six Fu and Five Zang organs; a洪 (Hong - Surging) and 数 (Shu - Rapid) pulse indicates this condition.
