Cough accompanied by hoarseness or aphonia is caused by wind-cold pathogenic factors injuring the Lung. The Lung governs Qi, and the Qi of the Five Zang organs is all directed by the Lung. Each of the Five Zang organs corresponds to one of the five vocal sounds, which all rely on the propulsion and circulation of Qi.
For treating cough with rebellious Qi ascending, panting, urgency, and hoarseness or aphonia, it is appropriate to take Beimu San (Fritillaria Powder).
Herbs: Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus, 1 liang, roasted until slightly yellow), Ziwan (Herba Asteris Tatarici, 3 qian, roots and soil removed), Maimendong (Radix Ophiopogonis, 1.5 liang, heart removed and dried), Renshen (Radix Ginseng, 3 qian), Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum, 3 qian, skin and tips removed, double-kernels discarded, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow).
The above herbs are crushed, sifted, and made into a powder. Take 2 qian (or 3 qian) per dose. Add 1 zhong zhan (approx. 200ml) of water, decoct until 6 fen remains, filter out the dregs, and take warm. Administer three times daily.
For treating cough resulting in inability to produce voice, it is appropriate to take Guixin San (Cinnamon Heart Powder).
Herbs: Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi, 3 qian), Helilepi (Pericarpium Chebulae, 3 qian), Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, 3 qian, processed until cracked and cut into pieces), Renshen (Radix Ginseng, 0.5 liang, radix part removed), Chifuling (Poria cum Radice Pini, 0.5 lian), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 1 fen, honey-roasted until slightly red).
The above herbs are crushed, sifted, and made into a powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add 1 zhong zhan of water and 2 jujubes, decoct until 6 fen remains, filter out the dregs, and take warm. Administer three times daily.
For treating cough, aphonia, and inability to speak, it is appropriate to take Xingren Jian (Apricot Kernel Decoction/Paste).
Herbs: Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum, 2 liang, soaked in hot water, skin and tips removed, double-kernels discarded, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow and ground into paste), Ziwan (Herba Asteris Tatarici, 1 liang, roots and soil removed), Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis, 1 liang), Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus, 1 liang, roots and soil removed), Baimi (Mel, 3 liang).
The above herbs are crushed, sieved, and made into fine powder. Take 1 da zhan (approx. 200ml) of cow's milk, add fresh ginger juice and rock sugar, decoct together until proper consistency is reached. Then add honey, and simmer over low heat until it forms a paste.
For treating lung-heat cough with inability to produce voice, it is appropriate to take Tiandongjian (Asparagus Root Paste).
Herbs: Shengtiantaodongzhi (Juice of Herba Asparagi, 5 he), Shengdihuangzhi (Juice of Radix Rehmanniae Recens, 3 he), Baimi (Mel, 5 he), Niusu (Butyrum Bovis, 2 he), Shengjiangzhi (Jucium Zingiberis Recens, 1 he), Baishatang (Saccharum Sinense Album, 1 liang), Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus, 1 liang, roots and soil removed), Renshen (Radix Ginseng, 3 qian, radix part removed).
The above herbs, such as Beimu, are finely cut. Add 3 da wan (approx. 600ml) of water, decoct until 1 da wan remains, filter out the dregs. Add Tiandongdongzhi, Dihuangzhi, Baimi, Baishatang, and Shengjiangzhi, continue decocting until proper consistency is reached to form a paste.
For treating acute sudden cough, aphonia, and inability to speak, it is appropriate to take Xingren Jian (Apricot Kernel Paste).
Herbs: Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum, 2 liang, soaked in hot water, skin and tips removed, double-kernels discarded, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow and ground into paste), Mutong (Caulis Akebiae Trifoliate, 1 liang, cut into pieces), Ziwan (Herba Asteris Tatarici, 1 liang, roots and soil removed), Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis, 1 liang), Shengjiangzhi (Jucium Zingiberis Recens, 1 he), Baimi (Mel, 3 liang).
The above herbs, starting from Mutong, the following five herbs are finely cut. Add 2 da zhan of water, decoct until 1 da zhan remains, filter out the dregs. Then add Xingren, mi, tang, and Jiangzhi, simmer over low heat until it forms a paste.
For treating cough with shortness of breath, chest fullness and oppression, and inability to speak, it is appropriate to take Wuweizi Jian (Schisandra Paste).
Herbs: Wuweizi (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis, 1 liang), Kua Donghua (Flos Dodecatheonis, 1 liang), Mutong (Caulis Akebiae Trifoliate, 1 liang, cut into pieces), Xixin (Radix et Rhizoma Asari, 1 liang), Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum, 2 liang, soaked in hot water, skin and tips removed, double-kernels discarded, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow), Renshen (Radix Ginseng, 3 qian, radix part removed), Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi, 3 qian), Qingzhuru (Interna Bambusae in Taeniam Viridis, 2 liang), Changpu (Rhizoma Acori Tatarinowii, 1 liang), Su (Butyrum Bovis, 2 liang), Zaogao (Paste of Jujube), Mi (Mel), Shengjiangzhi (Jucium Zingiberis Recens).
The above herbs, from Wuweizi down to nine ingredients, are crushed into coarse powder. Add 5 da zhan of water, decoct until 2 da zhan remains, filter out the dregs. Add Su, Zaogao, Mi, and Shengjiangzhi, continue decocting until proper consistency is reached to form a paste.
For treating cough, dry throat, and loss of voice, it is appropriate to take Hanhua Guixin Wan (Guixin Pill for Dissolving in Mouth).
Herbs: Guixin (Cortex Cinnamomi, 1 liang), Xingren (Semen Armeniacae Amarum, 1 liang, soaked in hot water, skin and tips removed, double-kernels discarded, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow and ground into paste), Gancao (Radix Glycyrrhizae, 1 fen, honey-roasted until slightly red and cut into pieces), Ganjiang (Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, 1 fen, processed until cracked).
