The throat and pharynx are the pathways for the ascent and descent of Qi and body fluids, and the passageway for food and drink. If wind-pathogen and heat-toxin accumulate in the Spleen, with evil qi stagnating and accumulating within the Zang organs without dissipating, it leads to vexation and heat in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner).
For treating dryness and pain in the throat caused by heat-toxin, accompanied by vexation and irritability in the heart and diaphragm, this formula is suitable:
Rhinoceros Horn Slice (Xi Jiao Xie) [1 liang], Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Chuan Sheng Ma) [1 liang], Gardenia Seed (Zhi Zi Ren) [3 fen], Isatis Leaf (Lan Ye) [0.5 liang], Akebia Caulis (Mu Tong) [1 liang, sliced], Ophiopogonis Radix (Mai Men Dong) [1 liang, heart removed].
Crush the above herbs into a coarse powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add 1 zhong of water, decoct until reduced to 6 fen, strain, and take warm at any time.
For treating dryness and pain in the throat, and difficulty in swallowing saliva, this formula is suitable:
Platycodon Root (Jie Geng) [1 liang, radix removed], Licorice Root (Gan Cao) [1 liang, raw and sliced], Arctii Fructus (Niu Bang Zi) [1 liang, lightly stir-fried].
Crush the above herbs into a coarse powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add 1 zhong of water and 1 fen of Bamboo Shavings (Zhu Ru), decoct until reduced to 6 fen, strain, and take warm at any time.
For treating heat-toxin attacking upward causing dryness and pain in the throat, it is suitable to use Shengma San (Cimicifuga Powder) for lozenges:
Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Chuan Sheng Ma) [1.5 liang], Belamcanda Rhizome (She Gan) [1 liang], Alum (Bai Fan) [0.5 liang, calcined to ash and finely ground], Trachelospermum Caulis (Luo Shi) [1 liang], Licorice Root (Gan Cao) [3 fen, raw and sliced], Bai Yao, Natrii Sulfas (Ya Xiao).
Grind the above herbs into a fine powder, mix evenly with the previous ingredients, and store in a porcelain box. Take 1 qian per dose, wrap in cotton, hold in the mouth to dissolve slowly, and swallow the saliva.
For treating dryness, burning heat, and pain in the throat, Luo Shi Jian Wan (Trachelospermum Decoction Pills) is suitable:
Trachelospermum Caulis (Luo Shi) [0.5 liang], Belamcanda Rhizome (She Gan) [0.5 liang], Rheum Palmatum Rhizoma (Chuan Da Huang) [1 fen], Akebia Caulis (Mu Tong) [1 fen, sliced], Bai Yao, Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Chuan Sheng Ma) [0.5 liang], Bovis Calculus (Niu Huang) [1 fen], Scutellariae Radix (Huang Qin) [1 fen].
Except for the herbal juices, grind the remaining herbs into powder. First, use fresh Rehmanniae Radix juice and honey, decoct in a silver pot over slow fire until forming a paste. Then add the various herbal powders.
For treating wind-heat attacking upward, causing dryness and pain in the throat, potential formation of sores, and oppression/stuffiness in the chest and heart, Xijiao Wan (Rhinoceros Horn Pill) is suitable:
Rhinoceros Horn Slice (Xi Jiao Xie) [1 liang], Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Chuan Sheng Ma) [1 liang], Rheum Palmatum Rhizoma (Chuan Da Huang) [1 liang, sliced, lightly stir-fried], Scutellariae Radix (Huang Qin) [0.5 liang], Scrophulariae Radix (Xuan Shen) [1 liang], Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma (Ren Shen) [1 liang, radix removed], Apricot Seed (Xing Ren) [1 liang, skin and tip removed, stir-fried].
Grind the above herbs into a powder. Mix with refined honey, pound and knead 200–300 times. Form pills the size of paulownia seeds. After meals, take 20 pills with warm water.
