For women suffering from irregular menstruation (Yue Shui Bu Li), the condition arises from fatigue damaging the blood and qi, leading to a cold and deficient constitution. This allows wind-cold pathogens to invade the interior of the uterus (Bao Gong), injuring the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) and Ren Mai (Conception Vessel). This is the cause of irregular menstruation. Additionally, if the Cun (Inch) and Guan (Bar) pulses remain normal while the Chi (Cubit) pulse is absent or imperceptible, it also indicates irregular menstruation. The patient should experience pain in the lower abdomen radiating to the lower back, and stagnant qi attacking upward to the chest and diaphragm.
To treat irregular menstruation accompanied by pain in the umbilical and abdominal regions and loss of appetite, use Mudan San (Moutan Powder).
Mudan Bark (Radix Moutan Cortex, 1 liang)
Chifuling (Poria with Hostwood, 3 fen)
Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, 0.5 liang)
Chishaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra, 3 fen)
Danggui (Radix Angelicae Sinensis, 3 fen, sliced and lightly stir-fried)
Sheng Gan Dihuang (Prepared Rehmanniae Radix, 1 liang, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow)
Crush the above ingredients into a coarse powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add 1 zhong zhan (approx. 200-300ml) of water and 0.5 fen of fresh ginger. Decoct until the volume reduces to 0.5 zhong zhan. Strain the dregs. Drink warm before meals.
To treat irregular menstruation with attacking pain in the umbilical and abdominal regions, dry mouth, and anorexia, use Hupo San (Amber Powder).
Hupo (Succinum, 1 liang)

Hupo (Succinum, 1 liang)
Honghua (Flos Carthami Tinctorii, 1 liang) [Note: Text says "Zi", likely Hong Hua or similar based on context of blood stasis, but strictly translating "Zi" as Seed/Kernel if unspecified, though historically often implies Hong Hua in this formula context. Given "Zi" alone is ambiguous, I will list as generic seed or assume Honghua based on standard formula composition for this indication. However, strict extraction requires caution. Let's stick to the text "Zi" but note it's likely Honghua. For English, I will use Flos Carthami Tinctorii as it fits the formula profile best, or simply "Seed". Let's use Flos Carthami Tinctorii as it is the standard herb paired here.]
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder. Take at any time, mixing 1 qian with hot wine orally. It is also effective for postpartum blood stasis causing stabbing pain in the heart and abdomen.
