Abortion. After the fetus is initially expelled, the woman's strength is depleted and she cannot exert further effort to deliver the placenta. If exposed to external cold, the cold causes blood coagulation, thus preventing the expulsion of the placenta.
For treating abortion during the fifth or sixth month of pregnancy with retained placenta: Niuxi San (Cowherb Powder) formula.
Niuxi (3 fen, remove seedlings), Guixin (Cinnamon Twig Heart, 0.5 liang), Xiong (Sichuan Lovage Rhizome, 3 fen), Chuan Puxiao (Mirabilite, 3 fen), Danggui (Angelica Sinensis, 1.5 liang), Puhuang (Tiger Lily Pollen, 1 qian).
The above ingredients are coarsely ground into a powder. Each dose consists of 4 qian. Add 1 zhong zhan of water, 0.5 fen of fresh ginger, and 1 fen of Shengdihuang (Rehmannia Root). Decoct until reduced to 0.6 zhong zhan. Strain the dregs. Allow to cool to warm temperature and take frequently for efficacy.

In cases where the pregnant woman is emaciated or complicated by disease, leading to deficiency and damage of the Zang-Fu organs, exhaustion of Qi and Blood, resulting in the inability to nourish the fetus, causing fetal movement instability and failure to secure the pregnancy:
