The etiology of excessive salivation in infants is attributed to the accumulation and stagnation of wind-heat pathogens in the Spleen, which condenses into saliva. If there is an excess of saliva, it leads to the inability to take milk or food, with saliva foam becoming solidified and obstructive.
For treating excessive salivation due to Wind affecting the Spleen in infants, characterized by oppression and stuffiness in the chest and heart, inability to take milk or food, lethargy, and excessive sleepiness, use Qianshuang San (Lead Frost Powder).
Ingredients: Qianshuang (Lead Frost, finely ground), Niuhuang (Calculus Bovis, finely ground), Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, soaked in boiling water seven times to remove slipperiness), Longnao (Borneolum Syntheticum, finely ground; each of the above half liang); Baifuzi (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Rhizoma, processed until cracked).
Pulverize the above ingredients through a fine sieve to make a powder. Add the already ground medicines and mix evenly. Administer at any time, mixing one "zi" (a traditional small measurement) with warm water containing ginger and honey. Adjust the dose according to the infant's age and size.
For treating excessive salivation on the upper diaphragm due to Wind-Heat affecting the Spleen and Lungs in infants, characterized by mental confusion and oppression, and reduced desire for milk or food, use Fangfeng San (Saposhnikoviae Root Powder).
Ingredients: Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix, remove the root head), Lingyangjiaoxie (Saigae Tataricae Cornu), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Renshen (Ginseng Radix, remove the root head), Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow and remove the pith), Gancao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried until slightly red and chopped; each of the above one liang).
Pulverize the above ingredients through a coarse sieve to make a powder. For each dose of one qian, add one small cup of water and a little fresh ginger. Decoct until five fen of liquid remains, then filter out the dregs. Administer at any time.
For treating excessive salivation due to Heat accumulation in the Heart and Spleen in infants, use Niubangzi San (Arctii Fructus Powder).
Ingredients: Niubangzi (Arctii Fructus), Zhizi Ren (Gardeniae Semen), Gancao (Licorice Radix et Rhizoma, honey-fried until slightly red and chopped), Chuanniao (Natrii Sulfas), Yujin (Curcumae Radix; each of the above half liang); Zhike (Aurantii Fructus Immaturus, one fen, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow and remove the pith).
Pulverize the above ingredients through a fine sieve to make a powder. Add half a qian of Borneolum Syntheticum and grind together until uniform. Administer at any time, mixing half a qian with warm mint water. Adjust the dose according to the infant's age and size.
For treating excessive salivation in the chest and diaphragm and inability to take milk or food due to Heat in the Spleen in infants, use Banxia Wan (Pinelliae Pill).
Ingredients: Banxia (Pinelliae Rhizoma, half fen, washed seven times with ginger decoction to remove slipperiness), Zaojiaoren (Gleditsiae Sinensis Spina Semen, half liang).
Pulverize the above ingredients through a sieve to make a powder. Mix with ginger juice to form pills the size of hemp seeds. Administer at any time, swallowing three pills with warm water. Adjust the dosage according to the infant's age and size.
Another prescription:
Take the saliva from the mouth of a cow that has not yet calved, and apply it inside the infant's mouth. This is effective.
Another prescription:
Take a small amount of white goat manure, grind it in water to extract the juice, and apply it inside the infant's mouth. This is effective.
Another prescription:
Take the white sap from mulberry roots and apply it inside the infant's mouth. This is effective.
Another prescription:
Take powdered deer horn, stir-fry until scorched, and grind it finely. Mix with clear rice gruel and administer one "zi".
Another prescription:
Take Niucao (Cow Grass/Herb), wring out the juice, and give it to the infant in small amounts.
