Infants and children suffering from constipation are caused by heat pathogens in the zang-fu organs invading the large intestine. The spleen and stomach are the sea of water and grain; the essence of water and grain transforms into blood, (and if heat is excessive, it consumes body fluids) leading to dry stool.
Da Huang San (Rhubarb Powder) for treating heat stagnation in the zang-fu organs of infants and children, restlessness of the heart-mind, and constipation:
Rhizoma et Radix Rhei (Da Huang, 1 liang, crushed and lightly stir-fried), Cornu Saigantae Tatarici (Xi Jiao, 0.5 liang), Rhizoma Cimicifugae (Sheng Ma, 0.5 liang), Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Dang Gui, 1 fen), Radix Paeoniae Rubra (Chi Shao Yao, 1 fen), Nixue (Hong Xue, a small amount).
Crush the above herbs and sieve them coarsely to make a powder. Take 1 qian per dose, decoct with one small cup of water until reduced to 0.6 cup, remove the dregs. For children aged three to four, take 1 he of the warm decoction, adjusting the dosage according to the child's size.
Xiong Huang San (Ligusticum and Rhubarb Powder) for treating constipation in infants and children accompanied by abdominal and hypochondriac distension and oppression:
Radix Ligustici Chuanxiong (Chuan Xiong, 0.5 liang), Rhizoma et Radix Rhei (Da Huang, 3 fen, crushed and lightly stir-fried), Semen Pruni (Yu Li Ren, 3 fen, soaked in warm water, skin removed, and lightly stir-fried).
Crush the above herbs and sieve them finely to make a powder. Take 1 qian per dose, mix with half a cup of warm water. Adjust the dosage downward based on the child's age and size, stopping when defecation occurs.
Another prescription:
Pericarpium Citri Reticulatae (Chen Pi, 1 fen, soaked in warm water, pith removed, and baked until yellow), Fructus Phyllanthi (Qian Niu Zi, 0.5 liang, lightly stir-fried), Radix Glycyrrhizae (Gan Cao, 1 liang, honey-fried until slightly red and crushed), Rhizoma et Radix Rhei (Da Huang, 0.5 liang, crushed and lightly stir-fried).
Crush the above herbs and sieve them finely to make a powder. For each dose, take 0.5 qian mixed with decocted white scallion water. Adjust the dosage up or down based on the child's age. Take two to three times daily, until efficacy is achieved.
Dan Sha Wan (Cinnabar Pill) for treating constipation in infants and children, with restlessness and heat in the heart-mind, sudden fright during sleep, and abdominal and hypochondriac distension and oppression:
Mineral Cinnabar (Dan Sha, 0.5 liang, finely ground and purified by water flotation), Semen Euphorbiae Lathyridis (Xu Sui Zi, 3 fen), Calomelas (Ni Fen, 1 qian).
Grind the above herbs together until uniform. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of mung beans. For a three-year-old child, administer two pills with warm water, adjusting according to the child's size.
Tong Zhong Wan (Unblocking the Middle Pill) for treating constipation in infants and children, with pain and oppression in the heart and abdomen, and irritability and panting when lying down:
Rhizoma et Radix Rhei (Da Huang, 1 liang, crushed and lightly stir-fried), Semen Crotonis (Ba Dou, processed into Ba Dou Shuang, 2 fen), Spatha Meliae Toosendan (Zao Jia, 1 liang, non-borer variety, skin and seeds removed, burned until charred black).
Pulverize Da Huang and Zao Jia, mix with Ba Dou Shuang until uniform. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of mung beans. For children aged four to five, administer with warm water.
Xi Jiao Wan (Horn of Saiga Antelope Pill) for treating stagnation in the zang-fu organs of infants and children, abdominal and hypochondriac distension and oppression, and constipation:
Cornu Saigantae Tatarici (Xi Jiao, 0.5 liang), Radix Angelicae Sinensis (Dang Gui, 0.5 liang, crushed and lightly stir-fried), Rhizoma et Radix Rhei (Da Huang, 1 liang, crushed and lightly stir-fried), Semen Crotonis (Ba Dou, 10 seeds, skin and heart removed, ground and pressed between paper to remove oil).
Pulverize the above herbs, add Ba Dou and Dan Sha, and grind until uniform. Mix with refined honey to form pills the size of mung beans. For a three-year-old child, administer three pills with warm water.

Finely chop the above herbs. Decoct in three large bowls of vinegar-water broth for more than ten boils. Remove the dregs. Pour into a basin, allow to cool slightly, and let the child sit in the basin for fumigation and washing, applying the dregs externally.
Zou Ma Jian (Running Horse Arrow) for treating constipation in infants and children, with fullness and oppression extending to the waist, rapid breathing, and heaviness:
Bile Ovis Aries (Yang Dan, one piece), Miel (Mi, 1 he), Sal Flor (Yan Hua, 0.5 liang).
Decoct the above ingredients together until they resemble maltose syrup. Shape into an arrow-like stick, about one inch long and thickness of a chopstick. Insert into the anus; passage will occur shortly.
