Infants suffering from *gan* accumulation (nutritional deficiency syndrome) with dysentery and abdominal pain are caused by frequent dysenteric stools leading to weakness of the intestines and stomach. Cold qi stagnates internally, clashing with the organ qi; true qi and pathogenic factors engage in fierce conflict, resulting in abdominal pain.
For infants with *gan* dysentery presenting with abdominal distension and pain, defecating thirty to twenty times a day, the Baizhu San (Atractylodes Macrocephala Powder) is indicated.
Herbs: Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, 1 liang, lightly stir-fried), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, ban liang, sliced and lightly stir-fried), Diyü (Sanguisorbae Radix, ban liang, lightly roasted and sliced), Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, ban liang), Chishao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra, ban liang).
Preparation and Administration: The above herbs are coarsely ground and sieved to make a powder. Each dose consists of one qian, decocted in one small cup of water until reduced to five fen. Strain the dregs. Administer at any time, adjusting the dosage according to the child's age and size.
For infants with *gan* dysentery and abdominal pain who refuse milk and food, the Caodoukou San (Cardamomum Rotundum Powder) is indicated.
Herbs: Caodoukou (Cardamomi Fructus Rotundus, 3 fen, peeled), Longgu (Fossi Mamut Dentis, 1 liang), Suan Shiliu Pi (Punicae Granati Pericarpium, 3 fen, sliced and stir-fried until slightly yellow), Gaoliangjiang (Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma, 1 fen, sliced), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix, ban liang).
Preparation and Administration: The above herbs are coarsely ground and sieved to make a powder. Each dose consists of one qian, decocted in one small cup of water with one stem of Xiebai (Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus) until reduced to five fen. Strain the dregs. Administer at any time.
For infants with *gan* dysentery characterized by white pus in the stool and dull abdominal pain, the Fuzi San (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata Powder) is indicated.
Herbs: Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, one piece, processed until cracked, peel and umbilicus removed), Longgu (Fossi Mamut Dentis, ban liang), Chishizhi (Halloysit Rubrum, ban liang, finely ground), Mituoseng (Lithargyri, 1 fen, finely ground), Huangdan (Minii Oxidum, 1 fen, calcined to ash), Helile (Terminalia Chebulae Fructus, i.e., Hezi).
Preparation and Administration: The above herbs are finely ground and sieved to make a powder. Each dose is mixed with half a qian using rice broth for administration, taken three to four times daily. Adjust the dosage based on the child's age and condition.
For infants with *gan* dysentery presenting with abdominal distension and pain, the Muxiang Wan (Aucklandia Pill) is indicated.
Herbs: Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix, ban liang), Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata, ban liang, raw, peel and umbilicus removed), Badou (Crotonis Tiglii Semen, ban fen, peel and heart removed, ground and pressed between paper to remove oil), Chan Su (Toad Venom, ban fen, ground and incorporated), [Text fragment: Fen qu lu tou - likely referring to removing the root end of a rhizome].
Preparation and Administration: The above herbs are ground into powder. Vinegar-boiled wheat paste is used as a binder to form pills the size of millet seeds. Each dose consists of two pills, administered with rice broth, twice daily. Adjust the dosage based on the child's age and size.
