For pediatric patients suffering from dysentery with unceasing thirst, this condition arises from the depletion of fluids and essence derived from food and drink. The dryness of the fu and zang organs leads to a desire for drinking. If urination is smooth and dysentery ceases, the thirst will also stop.
If urination is difficult and scanty, water fails to circulate in the small intestine, and the stomach is deficient; consequently, thirst persists and dysentery does not cease. In all such cases, the body becomes edematous due to spleen qi deficiency, which fails to control water metabolism. There will inevitably be eye pain and the formation of corneal opacities (cataracts). The upper jiao of children is inherently hot; now, compounded by dysentery, the lower jiao becomes deficient, causing the heat in the upper jiao to intensify. This pathogenic heat steams and harasses the heart and lungs.
