When the five zang organs of infants and children are disharmonious, carbuncles (ju) may arise. This is also caused by cold pathogens invading the skin, obstructing the flow of blood and qi. When blood and qi become stagnant and涩 (obstructed), they condense and accumulate to form the lesion. The general treatment principle is similar to that for abscesses (yong).
For treating carbuncles in infants and children caused by heat-toxin, characterized by swelling, hardness, pain, as well as various red and white erysipelas-like sores and boils, the Loulu San (Imperata Powder) formula is suitable.
Loulu (Rhizoma Imperatae, half liang) Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae, half liang, roots and joints removed) Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae, half liang) Chuan Mangxiao (Natrii Sulfas, half liang) Chuan Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae, three qian) Zhishi (Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, three qian) Chi Shaoyao (Radix Paeoniae Rubra, two qian)
The above herbs are coarsely crushed and sieved. Take one qian per dose, decoct with one small cup of water until reduced to half a cup, filter out the dregs. Administer divided doses according to the child's age, at any time.
For treating carbuncle swelling in infants and children caused by heat-toxin, as well as swelling from various red and white erysipelas, or scrofula (luoli), sores, boils, and wind-rash itching on the body, the Muxiang San (Aucklandia Powder) formula is suitable.
Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae, one qian) Xunlu Xiang (Olibanum, one qian) Chenxiang (Lignum Aquilariae Resinatum, one qian) Jigu Xiang (Radix Polygala, one qian) Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, one qian) Mahuang (Herba Ephedrae, one qian, roots and joints removed) Bran-fried until slightly yellow)
The above herbs are coarsely crushed and sieved. Take one qian per dose, decoct with one small cup of water until reduced to half a cup, filter out the dregs, add half he of bamboo sap (zhuli), and boil for two or three more boils.
For treating carbuncle swelling in infants and children, as well as sores and boils, accompanied by high fever, dry mouth, and restlessness, the Huangqin San (Scutellaria Powder) formula is suitable.
Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, half liang, sliced) Lianqiao (Fructus Forsythiae, half liang) Chuan Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae, half liang) Xuanshen (Radix Scrophulariae, one qian) Danshen (Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae, one qian) Lu Fengfang (Nidus Vespae, one qian, lightly roasted)
The above herbs are coarsely crushed and sieved. Take one qian per dose, decoct with one small cup of water until reduced to half a cup, filter out the dregs, let cool to warm. Administer divided, reduced doses according to the child's age.
For treating carbuncle toxin with hard swelling, high fever, and intense thirst in infants and children, the Xijiao San (Rhinoceros Horn Powder) formula is suitable.
Xijiao Xie (Cornu Rhinocerotis, three qian) Gegen (Radix Puerariae, half liang, sliced) Maidong (Tuber Ophiopogonis, one liang, heart removed and baked) Chuan Shengma (Rhizoma Cimicifugae, half liang) Muxiang (Radix Aucklandiae, half liang) Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, half liang)

For treating carbuncle toxin with hard swelling, pain, radiating redness to the surrounding areas in infants and children, the Chou Redu, Xiao Zhongqi, Xiao Shui Gao (Heat-Extracting, Swelling-Reducing, Water-Resolving Paste) formula is suitable.
Yangtao Gen (Cortex Cudrania Tricuspidatae, one liang, sliced) Chuan Dahuang (Radix et Rhizoma Rhei, one liang, sliced, raw use) Huangqin (Radix Scutellariae, half liang) Chixiaodou (Semen Phaseoli, half he) Huangbai (Cortex Phellodendri, half liang, sliced) Lv Dou (Semen Sojae Viridis, half he)
