Dry tinea (Gan Xuan) is characterized by distinct, raised borders of the lesions, dry and itchy skin, and the shedding of white dandruff-like scales upon scratching. This condition arises primarily from wind-dampness pathogenic factors invading the couli (interstices of the skin and subcutaneous tissue), compounded by cold-dampness clashing with the body's blood and qi. If the wind-toxic qi is predominant while dampness is scant, the wind pathogen penetrates deeply into the skin, resulting in a lack of exudate, thus forming dry tinea. Parasitic worms may also generate within the affected area.
For treating dry tinea presenting with white scales rising upon scratching, use the Huanglian San (Coptis Powder) formula:
Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, 1 liang, remove rootlets); Lilu (Veratris Radix, 0.5 liang, remove rhizome head); Chuan Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, 1 liang); Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, 0.5 liang, raw and chopped); Ru (1 liang); Mangcao (Arisaematis Cum Bile, 1 liang).
The above herbs are finely ground and sieved to form a powder. Add 1 jin of lard and simmer over low heat until it forms an ointment. Filter out the dregs and store in a porcelain vessel. First, wipe the lesion with a new cloth to cause slight abrasion, then apply the medicine. Cures are invariably achieved.
For dry tinea with unrelenting itching, it is suitable to apply the Hufen San (Lead Carbonate Powder) formula:
Hufen (Galena/Lead Carbonate); Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma, remove rootlets); Shechuangzi (Cnidii Fructus); Bailian (Paeoniae Rubra Radix or Ampelopsis Radix - context suggests Paeoniae Radix Alba or similar, here translated as Bai Lian). (Each of the above: 0.5 liang).
The above herbs are ground and sieved into a fine powder. Mix with mianzhi (fat derived from flour/starch) for topical application. If the area is moist, apply when dry.
Formula for unrelenting itching and pain in dry tinea:
Caowutou (Aconiti Kusnezoffii Radix, 1 fen); Yelangya (Saposhnikoviae Radix or similar, literally Wild Wolf Tooth, likely referring to a specific herb like Saposhnikovia or similar acrid herb, kept as Yelangya); Banmao (Mylabris, 7 pieces).
Use the above herbs raw. Grind finely and sieve into a powder. Mix with kouzi (lip balm/fat). Use a bamboo spatula to scrape the lesion open before applying the medicine. Rub vigorously to penetrate the flesh. Wait for yellow fluid to exude; cure within two to three days.
Another formula:
Banmao (Mylabris, 7 pieces collected on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month); Shexiang (Moschus, 0.5 qian).
Grind the above herbs together into a powder. Mix with vinegar and apply to the lesion. Cure occurs after a small amount of yellow fluid is discharged.
Yet another formula:
Chuan Wutou (Aconiti Radix, 2 pieces, raw); Ganxie (Scorpio, 5 pieces).
Grind the above herbs into a powder. Mix with mianyou (flour oil/fat) to make an ointment. Apply topically.
Miraculous Effect Formula for dry tinea regardless of duration:
Shuiyin (Mercurius, 0.5 liang); Wuyi (Chrysanthemi Indici Fructus, 0.5 liang, powdered); Hufen (Galena/Lead Carbonate, 0.5 liang); Huanyanzhi (Flower Rouge/Vermilion, 0.5 liang).
Grind all ingredients together. Add 4 liang of refined lard from the twelfth lunar month. Grind until the mercury stars disappear completely. First wash the lesion with rice water, dry it, and then apply.
Formula for chronic dry tinea with accumulated crusts, yellow exudate upon scratching, and itching exacerbated by rainy weather:
Badou (Crotonis Fructus, 10 plump seeds).
Roast the Badou over charcoal fire until the oil is fully expressed. Then, in a mortar, grind with a small amount of su (clarified butter/ghee) into a paste. Apply thinly. Cure within one or two applications.
Another formula:
Take Yelangdu (Stellerae Chamaejasmi Radix), grind with vinegar, and apply.
Another formula:
Take the inner bark of the Quercus dentata tree (Hushu Baipi) and apply.
Another formula:
Take the inner bark of the Prunus persica tree (Taoshu Baipi), pound until extremely pulpy, mix with vinegar, and apply.
Another formula:
Banmao (Mylabris, 0.5 liang, lightly stir-fried).
Grind and sieve into a powder. Mix with honey and apply thinly for cure.
Another formula:
Take Qingxiangzi (Celosiae Semen) powder. Mix with kouzi (lip balm/fat). First wash the area with jiangshui (fermented grain wash/water), then apply.
