When a patient has suffered from seasonal epidemic pathogens (Shi Qi) and undergone vomiting or purging, or when the illness has just subsided, the Qi of the Spleen and Stomach is deficient. This deficiency prevents the transformation and transportation of water and grain, leading to retained food (Su Shi) that is difficult to digest. Symptoms include frequent headaches and eye pain, intermittent chills and fever, or vexation and fullness in the chest, abdomen, and epigastrium, as well as dryness and constipation of the Large Intestine. These are all characteristic manifestations.
For cases following seasonal epidemics where Spleen and Stomach Qi is deficient, presenting with empty distension in the chest and abdomen and indigestion after eating, the Zhi Shi San (Immature Bitter Orange Powder) formula is appropriate.
Zhi Shi (Immature Bitter Orange, Fructus Aurantii Immaturus, 1 liang, stir-fried with bran until slightly yellow)
Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma, Radix Ginseng, 1 liang, remove the radicle)
Gan Jiang (Dried Ginger Rhizome, Rhizoma Zingiberis Recens, 0.5 liang, processed by heating until cracked and cut into small pieces)
Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephalae, 3 fen)
Gui Xin (Cinnamon Twig Heart, Cortex Cinnamomi Ramulus, 3 times, remove the slippery coating)
Crush and sieve the above ingredients to make a powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add 1 zhong zhan (approx. 200-300ml) of water, 0.5 fen of fresh ginger, and 3 jujubes. Decoct until 6 fen remains. Strain and take warm before meals.
For cases following seasonal epidemics with retained food not digesting and loss of appetite, the Mai Nie San (Sprouted Wheat Powder) formula is appropriate.

For cases following seasonal epidemics with Stomach deficiency, presenting with oppression and stuffiness in the chest and diaphragm, intermittent chills and fever, and retained food not digesting, the Ren Shen San (Ginseng Powder) formula is appropriate.
