The small intestine is the fu-organ of the heart. The heart and the small intestine share an exterior-interior relationship. When heat pathogenic factors accumulate in the heart and persist for a long time without being resolved, sweating depletes body fluids (Jin-Ye), leading to insufficiency that fails to nourish and irrigate. Consequently, toxic heat flows into the small intestine, causing urinary obstruction.
For epidemic febrile diseases (Shi-Qi) presenting with alternating chills and fever, heaviness in the four limbs, loss of taste, sensation of regurgitation and blockage in the chest, and urinary obstruction, it is appropriate to administer Chi Fu Ling San (Red Poria Powder).
Chi Fu Ling (Poria Cocos, half tael or one tael) Qian Hu (Peucedani Radix, three fen, remove rhizome base) Bai Xian Pi (Dictamni Cortex, one tael) Qu Mai (Polygoni Avicularis Herba, one tael) Zi Qin (Scutellariae Radix, half tael) Zhi Zi Ren (Gardeniae Fructus, half tael) Hua Shi (Talcum, two taels) Chuan Sheng Ma (Bupleuri Radix, three fen) Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis, one and a half taels, sliced)
Crush and sieve the above ingredients to make a powder. Take three qian per dose. Add one zhong of water, decoct until six parts remain, strain, and take warm at any time.
For epidemic febrile diseases where toxic heat flows into the small intestine causing urinary obstruction, it is appropriate to administer Bei Chi San (Concha Meretricis Powder).
Bei Chi (Concha Meretricis, forty-nine pieces) Bai Xian Pi (Dictamni Cortex, one tael) Zhu Ling (Polyporus, one tael, remove black skin) Chuan Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, one tael, sliced and lightly stir-fried) Qu Mai (Polygoni Avicularis Herba, one tael)
Crush and sieve the above ingredients finely to make a powder. Take three qian per dose at any time, mixed with one zhong of warm water and half a spoonful of honey. Repeat after some time. Stop when urination becomes unobstructed.
For epidemic febrile diseases lasting four to five days with unresolved chills and fever, headache, restlessness and fullness in the heart and abdomen, and urinary obstruction, it is appropriate to administer Xi Jiao San (Rhino Horn Powder).
Xi Jiao Xie (Hornis Rhinocerotis, shaved) Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, remove seedlings) Chi Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra) Qu Mai (Polygoni Avicularis Herba) Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis, sliced) (each one tael) Hua Shi (Talcum, two taels) Chuan Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, two taels or one tael, sliced and lightly stir-fried)
Crush and sieve the above ingredients to make a powder. Take five qian per dose. Add one large zhong of water, decoct until five parts remain, strain, and take warm at any time. Stop when urination becomes unobstructed.
For epidemic febrile diseases with aversion to cold, high fever, headache, and urinary obstruction, it is appropriate to administer Chai Hu San (Bupleuri Powder).
Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix, remove seedlings) Yin Chen (Artemisiae Scopariae Herba) Chuan Da Huang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma, sliced and lightly stir-fried) Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis, sliced) Chuan Sheng Ma (Bupleuri Radix) Zhi Zi Ren (Gardeniae Fructus) Chuan Mang Xiao (Natrii Sulfas, one tael each) Mao Gen (Imperatae Rhizoma, sliced) (each one tael)
