The ear is the external manifestation of the Kidney. If Kidney Qi is excessive and generates internal heat, this heat causes stagnation in the Upper Jiao (Upper Burner), blocking the meridians and collaterals, preventing their free flow, allowing pathogenic heat to invade the ear orifice.
For sudden deafness and heavy head caused by excess Kidney Qi and stagnation of wind-heat in the Upper Jiao, use Lingyangjiao San (Antelope Horn Powder).
Lingyangjiao (Antelope Horn) (1 liang) Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (3 fen) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (3 fen, remove radicle) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (3 fen, sliced) Xuanshen (Scrophulariae Radix) (3 fen) Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) (3 fen)
Crush and sieve the above herbs into a powder. Take 4 qian per dose. Add 1 zhong of water, 1 liang of Shengdihuang (Rehmanniae Radix), and 14 leaves of Zhuye (Bambusae Folium). Decoct together until reduced to 6 fen. Strain and discard the dregs.
For empty ringing in both ears, heavy head, and vertigo caused by wind-toxin stagnation transforming into heat and phlegm obstruction in the chest and heart, it is suitable to take Xijiao San (Rhinoceros Horn Powder).
Xijiao (Rhinocerotis Cornu) (0.5 liang) Ganjuhua (Chrysanthemi Flos) (0.5 liang) Qianhu (Peucedani Radix) (0.5 liang, remove radicle) Zhike (Aurantii Fructus) (0.5 liang, stir-baked with bran until slightly yellow, remove pith) Changpu (Acori Tatarinowii Rhizoma) (0.5 liang) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (0.5 liang) Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) (0.5 liang)
Crush and sieve the above herbs into a powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add 1 zhong of water. Decoct until reduced to 5 fen. Strain and take after meals.
For sudden deafness and tinnitus caused by wind-heat in the Upper Jiao, accompanied by fullness and tightness in the four limbs, and dizziness with discomfort, it is suitable to take Fushen San (Poria with Wood Powder).
Fushen (Poria with Pinus Root) (1 liang) Qianghuo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) (0.5 liang) Manjingzi (Vittaginis Fructus) (0.5 liang) Yiyiren (Coicis Semen) (0.5 liang) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (0.5 liang, sliced) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (0.5 liang, remove radicle)
Coarsely sieve the above herbs into a powder. Take 3 qian per dose. Add 1 zhong of water and 0.5 ban of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens). Decoct until reduced to 5 fen. Strain and take warm after meals.
For deafness where one cannot hear speech, benefiting Kidney Qi and reducing heat, use Lingyangjiao San (Antelope Horn Powder).
Lingyangjiao (Antelope Horn) (1 liang) Shashen (Glehniae Radix) (3 fen) Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix) (3 fen, remove radicle) Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) (3 fen, sliced) Xuanfuhua (Inulae Flos) (0.5 liang) Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma) (3 fen)

For wind-heat, where toxic vapors attack the ear causing sudden deafness due to excess heat of Kidney Qi, it is suitable to take Dahuang Wan (Rhubarb Pill).
Chuan Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) (0.5 liang, stir-fried with honey until crushed and slightly fried) Zhizi Ren (Gardeniae Fructus) (0.5 liang) Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix) (0.5 liang, sliced) Chuan Shengma (Cimicifugae Rhizoma) (0.5 liang) Chuan Puxiao (Natrii Sulfas) (0.5 liang) Huangbai (Phellodendri Cortex) (0.5 liang, sublimated)
