The Kidney belongs to Water and primarily governs the feet and knees. If Kidney Qi is deficient and assaulted by Wind-Dampness and toxic factors, the insufficiency of Kidney Qi fails to disseminate and circulate fluid metabolism.
Fluid metabolism cannot be transmitted to the Small Intestine, causing water qi to overflow and infiltrate the skin, thereby resulting in edema of the feet and knees.
For treating water qi disease presenting with edema of the feet and knees, difficulty in urination and defecation, and upper body asthma with rapid breathing, the Areca Seed Powder Formula (Binglang San):
Areca Seed (Banliang) [Arecae Semen]
Costus Root (Banliang) [Aucklandiae Radix]
Cinnamon Heart (Banliang) [Lae Cinnamomi Ramulus]
Perilla Stem and Leaf (Yi Liang) [Perillae Caulis et Folium]
Sloe Seed (Yiliang Ban), soaked in hot water, peeled, lightly stir-fried [Prunus armeniaca var. ansu seed]
Red Poria (Yi Liang) [Poria cum Ligno Rubrum]
Akebia Stem (Yi Liang), chopped [Akebiae Caulis]
Dried Tangerine Peel (Yi Liang), soaked in hot water, white pith removed, dried [Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium]
Pharbitis Seed (Er Liang), lightly stir-fried [Pharbitidis Semen]
The above ingredients are finely ground into a powder. Each dose consists of two qian, taken on an empty stomach mixed with decoction of Mulberry Root Bark (Sanggen Baipi). It is administered again at bedtime.

Phytolacca Leaf (Yi Liang) [Phytolaccae Folium]
Stephania Root (Yi Liang) [Stephaniae Tetrandrae Radix]
Alisma Rhizome (Yi Liang) [Alismatis Rhizoma]
Dried Tangerine Peel (Yi Liang), soaked in hot water, white pith removed, dried [Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium]
Kansui Root (Yi Liang), roasted until slightly yellow [Euphorbiae Kansui Radix]
The above ingredients are coarsely ground into a powder. For each dose, use one pair of pig kidneys, removing the fatty membrane, along with half he of soybeans. Boil these in two large zhan of water until reduced to one zhan, then consume.
Phytolacca Root (Yi Liang) [Phytolaccae Radix]
Adzuki Bean (Yi He) [Vigna angularis]
