For heat diseases manifesting as swelling and pain in the throat, this is caused by accumulated heat in the Spleen (Pí Zàng) and Lungs (Fèi Zàng) failing to dissipate. Why is this so? The Stomach (Wèi Zàng) is the sea of water and grain, connecting to the pharynx; the Lungs govern Qi and reside above the diaphragm, with their Qi channels penetrating through the larynx. When pathogenic heat lurks and stagnates in the Spleen and Lungs, it causes swelling and pain in the throat.
