Carbuncle (Yong, a type of deep-seated suppurative infection) arises from the disharmony of the Fu-organs. The Fu-organs govern the exterior; Qi circulates through the meridians and floats outward. If emotions are unpredictable or diet is irregular, Yin and Yang become disharmonized, pulse conditions become abnormal, Yang becomes excessive, skin thins, and bone marrow is damaged. In the initial stage, if a sore is seen on the skin and there is fear it may develop into carbuncle, accompanied by stagnation and obstruction in the Zang-Fu organs, alternating chills and fever, trismus (lockjaw), numbness and bi-syndrome, dry mouth, and vexation, use Xijiao San Formula.
Rhinoceros Horn Chips (Xijiao Jie, 1 liang) Anemarrhena Rhizome (Zhimu, 1 liang) Akebia Caulis (Mutong, 2 liang, sliced) Red Peony Root (Chishaoyao, 1.5 liang) Bupleurum Root (Chuan Shengma) Glehnia Root (Qini) Polygonatum Rhizome (Weirui) Scutellaria Root (Huangqin) Licorice Root (Gancao, raw and sliced, each 1.5 liang) Ophiopogon Tuber (Mendong, heart removed) Natrii Sulfas (Mayaxiao, each 2 liang)
The above ingredients are coarsely ground and sieved to make a powder. Take 4 qian per dose, decoct with one zhuan of water until reduced to 6 fen, strain the dregs, add 1 he of Bamboo Juice (Zhuli), boil once more, and take warm at any time.
