In cases where the fetus has been delivered but the placenta (bao yi) fails to follow, this condition is commonly referred to as "Xi Bao" (retained placenta due to exhaustion). This occurs because the parturient exerted excessive effort during the initial stage of labor; by the time the fetus is born, her physical strength is already depleted, rendering her unable to continue expelling the placenta.
Formulas for treating retained placenta after delivery:
Cinnabar powder (1 qian), Nifen (1 qian).
Grind the above ingredients finely into a powder. Decoct Shi Hui (Talcum) and Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis), and take 2 qian mixed with wine.
Formula for treating retained placenta, which can be fatal if abdominal distension occurs:
Take 1 he of black beans, stir-fry until cooked, add 1 small cup of vinegar, boil three to five times until boiling vigorously. Strain the dregs. Divide into three doses and take warm.
Formula for treating retained placenta when the patient is extremely exhausted and breath is nearly gone:
Take one earthworm (Lou Gu), decoct in 1 medium cup of water until it boils twenty times. Break its teeth/mouth open and administer the liquid. Once the medicine enters the abdomen, the placenta will be expelled, and life will be naturally preserved.
Another formula:
Ze Lan (Lycopus Herba, 1 liang, cut), Hua Shi (Talcum, 0.5 liang, powdered), Sheng Ma You (Raw Sesame Oil, 1 spoon).
Decoct Ze Lan in 1 medium cup of water until reduced to 6/10 volume. Strain the dregs, add the oil and Hua Shi powder. Take once when warm.
Another formula:
Niu Xi (Achyranthes Bidentatae Radix, 1 liang, remove tips), Kui Zi (Abutilon Theophrasti Semen, 1 he).
Crush the above ingredients. Decoct in 1.5 large cups of water until reduced to 1 large cup. Strain the dregs. Divide into two or three doses and take warm for efficacy.
Another formula:
Heat the sole of a boot and apply it as a hot compress to the lower abdomen. Apply up and down for 21 or 49 repetitions. Immediate effect.
Hua Shi Tang (Talcum Decoction) for treating retained placenta with unbearable abdominal pain, chest oppression, heavy limbs, and reluctance to speak:
Shi Hui (Talcum), Qu Mai (Dianthus Herba), Gui Xin (Cinnamon Twig Heart), Chi Shao Yao (Red Peony Root), Shi Wei (Pyrrosiae Folium), Bing Lang (Areca Seed), Gan Cao (Licorice Root, roasted until slightly red and cut), Kui Zi (Abutilon Theophrasti Semen), Chi Fu Ling (Red Poria, cut), Di Yu (Sanguisorbae Radix, cut). Equal parts.
Cut all ingredients. Decoct in 1.5 large cups of water until reduced to 1 large cup. Add 1 small cup of wine, boil three to five times more. Strain the dregs. Divide into three doses and take warm.
Another formula to expedite placental expulsion:
Niu Xi (Achyranthes Bidentatae Radix, 1 liang, remove tips), Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis, 3 fen), Mu Tong (Akebiae Caulis, 1.5 liang, cut), Kui Zi (Abutilon Theophrasti Semen, 1 he), Qu Mai (Dianthus Herba, 3 fen), Hua Shi (Talcum, 3 fen).
Coarsely grind and sieve the above ingredients into a powder. Each dose is 5 qian. Decoct in 1 medium cup of water until reduced to 6/10 volume. Strain the dregs and take warm.
Another formula:
Cong Bai (Scallion White, ten stalks with roots).
Cook in hot water in a copper basin. When the temperature is suitable, have the parturient sit over the basin to inhale the steam from the scallions. The placenta will descend shortly.
Another formula:
Take soot dust from the roof of the kitchen. Mix 2 qian with warm wine and ingest. The placenta will immediately drop.
Another formula:
Take the cloth used to cover the cooking pot (Chui Bi). Burn it to ash in front of the door. Each dose is 4 qian. Decoct in 1 medium cup of water until reduced to 6/10 volume. Strain the dregs and take warm.
Another formula:
Take 1 large cup of fresh Sheng Di Huang juice (Rehmannia Glutinosa Juice) and 1 small cup of wine. Warm them together. Divide into three doses and take warm for immediate effect.
Two talismans for rescuing retained placenta.

"Ni Sheng" (Breech presentation) occurs when abdominal pain is first felt before the time of delivery. Due to fright and disturbance, premature labor is triggered. If the fetus has not yet turned into the correct position and the mother exerts force too early, malpresentation results. This may also be caused by external trauma or interference.
Formula for treating breech presentation:
Apply salt to the soles of the infant's feet. Alternatively, scratch or stimulate the area urgently.
Formula for treating breech presentation and presenting hands or feet:
Burn snake skin to ash. Ingest with wine for efficacy.
Formula for difficult labor with cold hands and feet, locked jaw, and impending death:
Stir-fry Kui Zi (Abutilon Theophrasti Semen) until yellow. Crush and sieve into powder. Mix 3 qian with warm wine and ingest for immediate effect.
Formula for treating breech presentation with presenting hands or feet:
Puncture with a small needle. If pain and convulsions occur, insertion leads to smooth delivery.
Another formula:
Burn silkworm eggs to ash. Mix 3 qian with boiled water and ingest for efficacy.
Another formula:
Take a small amount of the complete fingernails from the husband's ten fingers. Burn to ash, grind finely, and ingest with warm wine.
Another formula:
Use cinnabar to draw the character "Qian" (Thousand) under the infant's left foot and "Li" (Inside) under the right foot. Effective even if hands present first.
Another formula:
Take soil from the axle of a cart, approximately three finger-pinches. Ingest with wine for verification of efficacy.
Another formula:
Cut Dang Gui (Angelica Sinensis), stir-fry lightly, crush into powder. Mix 2 qian with wine and ingest.
Another formula:
Ai Ye (Mugwort Leaf, 1 liang).
Decoct in 1 large cup of wine until reduced to 6/10 volume. Strain the dregs and divide into two warm doses for immediate effect. Boiling in water is also acceptable.
Another formula:
Grind Tu Si Zi (Cuscutae Semen) into powder. Mix 1 qian with warm wine and ingest for efficacy.
Another formula:
Grind Che Qian Zi (Plantaginis Semen) into powder. Mix 2 qian with warm wine and ingest for efficacy.
Another formula:
Use the middle finger to take soot from the bottom of a cauldron. Draw crosswise on the infant's feet. Delivery will proceed smoothly.
Another formula:
Take Fu Long Gan (Furnacis Cinis/Caulis Argillae Ustae), grind finely to 1 qian. Mix with wine and ingest. Also, attach earth to the infant's head.
Another formula:
Take che fat (Che Zhi). Draw on the infant's feet and palms.
Another formula:
Mix 2 qian of dust from the stove chimney with wine. Ingest for immediate effect.
