Chest bi (obstruction of the chest) accompanied by heart pain and back pain is caused by deficiency-cold of the zang-fu organs, with wind-cold pathogenic factors accumulating internally. These pathogens attack upward to the chest and invade the Heart. The righteous qi (vital energy) and pathogenic qi interact and contend with each other.
Formula for treating chest bi, presenting with heart pain, back pain, abdominal distension, fullness of qi, and inability to eat or drink: Wuzhuyu San (Evodia Powder).
Herbs: Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu, 吴茱萸) (ban liang, soaked in hot water seven times, dried by baking, and lightly stir-fried); Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin, 桂心) (ban liang); Alpiniae Officinarum Rhizoma (Gaoliangjiang, 高良姜) (ban liang, chopped); Poria Cocos (Chifuling, 赤茯苓) (yi liang); Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Danggui, 当归) (yi liang).
The above herbs are finely ground into a powder. Each dose consists of two qian, taken with warm wine, three to four times daily.
Formula for treating chest bi, where the patient cannot lie down, and heart pain radiates to the back:
Herbs: Trichosanthis Fructus (Gualou, 栝蒌) (one fruit); Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin, 桂心) (san fen); Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Banxia, 半夏) (yi liang, washed seven times in water to remove slipperiness).
The above herbs are ground and sifted into a powder. Each dose consists of three qian, decocted with one zhong of jiangshui (fermented grain liquid), adding seven stems of Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus (Xiebai, 薤白) and half a fen of Zingiberis Recens Rhizoma (Shengjiang, 生姜), until six parts remain. Strain and discard the dregs.
Formula for treating chest bi, presenting with heart and back pain, and shortness of breath:
Herbs: Asari Radix et Rhizoma (Xixin, 细辛) (ban liang); Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao, 甘草) (ban liang, honey-fried until slightly red and chopped); Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin, 桂心) (yi liang); Poria Cocos (Chifuling, 赤茯苓) (yi liang); Rehmanniae Radix Praeparata (Shudihuang, 熟干地黄) (san fen); Aurantii Fructus Immaturus (Zhishi, 枳实) (yi liang, bran-fried until slightly yellow).
The above herbs are finely ground into a powder. Each dose consists of three (or two) qian, taken with warm wine, three to four times daily.
Formula for treating chest bi, presenting with heart and back pain, attacked by malignant qi, and blocked voice:
Herbs: Arecae Semen (Binglang, 槟榔) (yi liang); Cinnamomi Cortex (Guixin, 桂心) (ban liang).
The above herbs are finely ground into a powder. Take at any time, mixed with decoction of Zingiberis Recens Rhizoma (Shengjiang, 生姜) and infant urine, one qian per dose.
