Among the six consciousnesses, the eyes are supreme, hence called Sun and Moon, likened to black pearls. The two luminaries distinguish black and yellow; they store the four qi and facilitate vision.
Therefore, the function of the eyes depends on the Gallbladder, gathers qi at the Heart, and is governed by the Eyes. The eyes are the essence of the Five Viscera. Diseases of the Five Viscera manifest in the eyes. Red eyes indicate disease in the Heart; white eyes indicate disease in the Lung; green eyes indicate disease in the Liver; yellow eyes indicate disease in the Spleen; black eyes indicate disease in the Kidney. If the condition cannot be named specifically, the disease is in the Chest. Loss of Yang qi leads to closed eyes (inability to see); exhaustion of Yin qi leads to blindness. Liver qi connects to the eyes. When Liver qi is harmonious, the five colors can be distinguished. When the Liver is diseased, the eyes lose essence and become dizzy. Cold in the Liver causes blurred vision and pain in the pupils. Pathogenic invasion of the Liver results in green-black eyes and unclear vision. Excess heat in the Liver causes eye pain like stabbing. Deficiency cold in the Liver causes swelling and redness with polyp formation. Thus, the eyes connect to the Five Viscera, and the eyelid wheels assist each other. The Blood Wheel belongs to Ji Earth. The Lung in the viscera... [Text fragment ends] ...under the Flesh Wheel...
