Tinnitus and deafness arise because the Kidney belongs to the Foot-Shaoyin meridian, stores essence (Jing), and its qi connects to the ears. The ears are the gathering point of the Zong Mai (Grand Vessels). If essence and qi are harmonious, Kidney qi is robust, allowing for clear discrimination of the five tones. However, if labor and fatigue damage blood and qi, and wind pathogen invades concurrently, accumulating in the Kidney and causing depletion of essence and qi, deafness results. If blood and qi are insufficient, the Zong Mai become deficient; wind pathogen enters the ears following this deficiency and strikes against qi, resulting in deafness.
To treat chronic deafness, nourishing the Kidney and strengthening bone qi, use Ci Shi Shen Geng Tang (Magnetite Pork Kidney Soup).
Ingredients: Ci Shi (Magnetite) (one jin, crushed, washed with water to remove red juice, wrapped in cotton); Zhu Shen (Pork Kidney) (one pair, fat membrane removed, finely sliced).
Preparation: Use five sheng of water to boil Ci Shi until two sheng remain. Remove Ci Shi, add the kidney, and season with Cong (Scallion), Chi Shao (Fermented Soybeans), Jiang (Ginger), and Jiao (Pepper) to make a soup. Consume on an empty stomach. It can also be prepared as porridge or taken with wine.
To treat deafness caused by Kidney qi deficiency and weakness, use Lu Shen Zhou (Deer Kidney Porridge).
