[Chan Hua Wu Bi San (Cicada Flower Matchless Powder)]
Treats all wind-induced eye diseases in adults and children, whether recent or long-standing. This includes qi attacking the eyes, dim vision, the formation of "wind millet" (small granules similar to hordeola) on the eyelids, pain accompanied by membranes invading the eyeball causing visual obstruction, and unclear vision. It also treats chronic lateral or frontal headaches that牵搐 (pull and twitch) both eyes, causing them to gradually become small, along with redness and ulceration of the orbital area. If the pathology enters the eye, white membranes cover the pupil, and the eyes are red, dry, and suffer from dull pain, this formula treats all such conditions. Regular consumption expels wind, resolves nebulae, and brightens vision.
Ophidia Skin (Snake Slough) (lightly roasted, 1 liang) Cicada Slough (remove head, feet, wings, 2 liang) Qiang Huo (Notopterygii Rhizoma et Radix) Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (wash, roast-dry) Shi Jue Ming (Haliotidis Concha) (roast with salt, 12 liang) [Note: Original text has omissions here].
Grind the above ingredients into fine powder. Take 3 qian each time after meals, mixed with rice wash water; clear tea water is also acceptable. Avoid foods that induce wind-toxicity.
[Ming Jing Di Huang Wan (Bright Eye Rehmannia Pill)]
Treats liver heat accumulation in men and women, dim vision due to liver deficiency, membranes invading the black part of the eye (water wheel), excessive tearing and discharge, seeing black spots before the eyes, blurred vision, and continuous cold tears. It treats nebulae obscuring vision, as well as kidney deficiency and exhaustion, liver affected by deficient heat, sudden red eyes due to recent or long-term heat, wind-toxic gas eyes, damp and dry jiaoqi (foot disease), xiaozhong/xiaoke (wasting-thirst syndrome), and various wind disorders caused by kidney qi deficiency and failure. Taking this medicine can tonify the liver and benefit the kidneys; its effects cannot be fully described.
Sheng Gan Di Huang (Raw Dried Rehmanniae Radix) (roast-dry, wash) Shu Gan Di Huang (Prepared Dried Rehmanniae Radix) (wash, roast-dry, 1 jin each) Niu Xi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix) (remove rhizome, soak in wine, 3 liang) Shi Hu (Dendrobii Caulis) [Note: Omission in original text] Fine grind, remove oil [Note: Omission in original text].
Grind the above into fine powder, mix with refined honey to form pills the size of paulownia seeds. Take 30 pills each time on an empty stomach before meals, swallowed with warm wine; rice water or salt water is also acceptable. Avoid all wind-inducing toxic foods.
[Xi Yan Zi Jin Gao (Eye-Washing Purple Gold Ointment/Paste)]
Treats nebulae obscuring vision from recent or long-standing cases, pterygium (fleshy growth over the cornea), dim vision with excessive tearing, unclear vision, or wind pathogen attack causing redness and ulceration of eyelids and orbits, photophobia, dryness, astringency, and difficulty opening the eyes. All these can be treated.
Zhu Sha (Cinnabaris) (separately ground) Ru Xiang (Olibanum) (separately ground) Peng Sha (Borax) (separately ground) Chi Shao Yao (Paeoniae Radix Rubra) Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (wash, roast-dry, 1 fen each) Xiong Huang (Realgar) [Note: Omission in original text].
Pound the ingredients, sieve into fine powder, mix with the separately ground medicines, pound again, and knead with refined honey to form pills the size of soap pod seeds. For each use, take one pill, place it in a clean cup, dissolve with boiling water, and wash the eyes in a draft-free place. After the medicine cools, close the eyes for a while. Wait two to three hours, then reheat gently and wash again as before. One dose can be used for washing three to five times. Do not wash using copper or iron vessels. If the eyes are suddenly red and swollen, do not wash.
