To treat asthma.
Take two pig trotter nails, burn them to ash and grind finely. Add one piece of Moschus (Shexiang, 麝香), grind together until fine. Mix with clear tea decoction from aged tea bricks (Lathe, 腊茶) and take orally.
To treat asthma.
Adenophorae Radix (Kudenghua, 款冬花), Anemarrhenae Rhizoma (Zhimu, 知母), Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix (Qinjiao, 秦艽), Stemona Radix (Baibu, 百部) [remove heart], Asteris Tatarici Radix (Ziwanrong, 紫菀茸), Fritillariae Bulbus (Beimu, 贝母), Colla Corii Asini (Ejiao, 阿胶), Glacini Semen (Nuomi, 糯米) [stir-fried, each 1 liang above], Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, 杏仁) [remove skin and tips, separately ground, 4 liang].
Grind the above herbs into powder. Take one sheep lung, wash it thoroughly with water first. Observe how much water it can hold, then use that amount of water plus a little more to boil the Armeniacae Semen Amarum (Xingren, 杏仁). Boil, filter, and pour the liquid into the lung, tying it securely. Cook in rice washing water until tender, grind into a paste, and mix with the herbal powder. Pound for thousands of strokes, form pills the size of Sophora japonica seeds (Wutongzi, 梧桐子). Take 50 pills per dose, administered before meals with a decoction of Moutan Cortex (Sangbaipi, 桑白皮).
Take 49 pig trotter nails, clean and dry them. Place half a zi (unit of weight) of Pinelliae Rhizoma Preparatum (Banxia, 半夏) and Alum (Baifan, 白矾) inside each nail. Seal in a jar, preventing smoke from escaping. Fire until red hot, remove from fire, and grind finely. Add 1 qian of Moschus (Shexiang, 麝香). For patients with upper asthma and cough, administer with a glutinous rice drink; children take half a qian.
Treating asthma caused by excess pathogenic qi. In early autumn of the Jiwu year, on the third day, I was summoned to Liupanshan. By mid-August, there had been continuous rain. At that time, following superior orders, I treated the wife of the Marshal. She was over fifty years old, obese and robust. Due to excessive consumption of alcohol and dairy products, she suffered from abdominal distension, asthma, chest fullness, audible breathing sounds outside the house, discomfort, and urinary stagnation. The Qi Kou pulse was large, twice as strong as the Ying Yang pulse. The Guan pulse was deep, slow, and forceful. I reasoned that the dampness from the continuous rain and the heat from dietary intake caused dampness to attack the Lung upward, disturbing the Shen Qi, thus resulting in asthma and chest fullness.
When pathogenic qi is excessive, it manifests as an Excess syndrome; Excess syndromes are suitable for purgation. Therefore, I formulated Pingqi San (Balancing Qi Powder) for purgation.
Semen Kochiae (Baiqianniu, 白牵牛) [half raw, half stir-fried, take the finest powder, 1 liang], Rheum Palmatum (Dahuang, 大黄) [7 qian], Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium (Chenpi, 陈皮) [remove white pith, half liang], Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride (Qingpi, 青皮) [remove white pith], Arecae Semen (Binglang, 槟榔).
The *Neijing* states: "The Lung dislikes rebellious Qi; urgently consume bitter flavors to drain it." Therefore, we use the bitter-cold nature of Semen Kochiae (Baiqianniu, 白牵牛) to drain damp-heat from the exterior level, which attacks upward causing asthma, making it the Sovereign herb. Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium, 陈皮) is bitter-warm and light/floating, regulating Lung Qi, serving as the Minister. Qingpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium Viride, 青皮) is bitter-pungent, dispersing stagnant Qi in the Lung, serving as the Assistant. Binglang (Arecae Semen, 槟榔) is pungent-warm and heavy/sinking, descending phlegm and Qi. Dahuang (Rheum Palmatum, 大黄) is bitter-cold, sweeping away fullness and excess, serving as the Envoy. Grind all into fine powder. Take 3 qian per dose, mixed with a large cup of Ginger Decoction, taken at any time. Reduce the first dose by half; after the second dose, asthma resolves. If only chest diaphragm discomfort, irritability, heat, dry mouth, and occasional cough remain, treat with Jiajian Xiebai San (Modified Draining White Powder).
