Changshan (Dichroa Radix) (those resembling chicken bones are preferred) Fushen (Poria with Hostwood) (remove skin and woody core) Rougui (Cinnamon Bark) (remove rough outer bark, equal parts with Changshan and Fushen) Gancao (Licorice Root) (use half the amount, increase slightly if heat symptoms are prominent)
Crush the above herbs using a stone mortar, avoiding contact with iron utensils, and grind them into a coarse powder. Take 0.5 liang per dose. Soak in most of a large bowl of regular wine overnight. On the morning of the day when the malaria attack is expected, take the strained decoction cold on an empty stomach. After taking the medicine, do not consume hot water or hot foods. The dregs can be soaked again or briefly boiled, and taken again shortly before the next expected attack. Another prescription excludes Rougui and Fushen, instead using Binglang (Areca Seed) and Wumei (Mume Fruit); adjustments should be made according to the patient's condition. For malaria, it is advisable to wait until it has attacked three to five times before using this formula to intercept the disease.
This treats all types of malaria, whether the fever precedes the chills or vice versa, whether there is more heat than cold or more cold than heat, or even chronic malaria lasting for years. A single dose is effective. This formula was transmitted by Luo, the salt tax official in Ganzhou, and has great efficacy.
Zhimu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) (straight ones are preferred) Beimu (Fritillariae Bulbus) Changshan (Dichroa Radix) Binglang (Arecae Semen) (each 5 qian)
Cut the above herbs into small pieces for one dose. Use one cup of water and one cup of wine. Cover with cotton cloth and expose to the night air overnight. Take cold facing east during the wugeng period (3-5 AM). Eat dry food until the shisi period (9-11 AM). If drinking water causes vomiting, ensure no women see the boiling process.
Treats all types of malaria.
Take one packet of Pingwei San (Pingwei Powder), one clove of garlic. Mash the garlic into a paste. Use a large bowl of well water to mix with the garlic paste and let it settle. Take half of the clarified liquid to mix with Pingwei San and drink it all. Then drink the remaining garlic water. Cover yourself with a thick quilt and lie down; sweating indicates recovery. My friend Zheng Yingsou contracted this illness while traveling to Beijing for the imperial examination. He received this formula from a Daoist priest.
Treats malaria with alternating chills and fever; it is a miraculous medicine.
Haoxin (Note: Unclear term, possibly a variant or typo for another herb like Huhuanglian/Anemarrhenae Rhizoma, but extracted as written) Huangqi (Sulfur) (equal parts)
Grind both together into a fine powder. Wrap a pinch-sized amount in crimson silk, forming pills the size of beans. Bind securely with fine silk thread several times, then cut off with scissors. Do not tie too tightly to prevent loss of medicine. Take one pill per dose, swallowed with fresh water drawn early in the morning, on an empty stomach. Keep this secret. If possible, start taking the medicine the night before the predicted attack day. On the morning of the actual attack, do not let others know. Go to a secluded, unknown place to rest, or a temple is also acceptable.
