Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Houpo) (remove coarse bark, chop into pieces, stir-fry with two liang of fresh ginger juice/paste); Trionycis Carapax et Plastrum (Biejia) (one large shell weighing nine jin, coated externally with yellow clay, soaked in rice water until saturated, then dried); Cinnamomi Ramulus (Guizhi) (remove coarse bark, chop); Terminalia Chebula Retz. Cinnamon Bark (Rougui) (remove coarse bark, chop); Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex (Houpo) (remove coarse bark, finely chop, soak with one liang of crushed fresh ginger overnight, stir-fry until fragrant); Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma (Gancao) (stir-fried, each one liang); Myristicae Semen (Roudoukou) (wrapped in flour and baked); Zingiberis Rhizoma Preparatum (Ganjiang) (processed); Syzygdii Fructus (Dingxiang); Piperis Longi Fructus (Hujiao); Aconiti Lateralis Radix Preparata (Fuzi) (processed, remove skin and bud); Aucklandiae Radix (Muxiang) (half liang); Terminalia Chebula Retz. Actions: Greatly regulate the spleen and stomach, relieve chest and diaphragm obstruction, regulate the middle jiao and smooth qi. The formula treats the winter months when yin qi is external and yang qi is internal. One should induce sweating to release exterior pathogens and dissipate interior yin fire, avoiding diarrhea; this is the key principle of secure closure and storage. In deep winter, water qi is prosperous; when water is prosperous, the mother is made solid (Kidney Water generates Liver Wood, but here context implies Kidney/Lung relationship or specific theory where Kidney is mother of Lung? Note: Traditional theory says Lung is mother of Kidney. Text says "Lung is Kidney's mother", so if Water/Kidney is strong, it affects its mother Lung). The lung governs the skin and hair; if the original constitution is weak, and winter aids this command, patients may sneeze frequently, have profuse turbid nasal discharge, continuous sneezing, greater aversion to wind and cold than usual, frequent and scanty urination, or clear and abundant urine after drinking. Severe cold may cause insomnia; extreme cases lead to phlegm cough, vomiting, hiccups, spitting white foam, opening mouth and staring eyes, and qi failing to circulate, approaching extinction.
Evodiae Fructus (Wuzhuyu); Alpiniae Katsumadai Semen (Caodoukou Ren) (each two qian two fen); Alpiniae Oxyphyllae Fructus (Yizhiren); Ginseng Radix (Renshen); Astragali Membranacei Radix (Huangqi); Cimicifugae Rhizoma (Shengma) (each eight fen); Bombyx Batryticatus (Baijiangcan); Alismatis Rhizoma (Zexie); Pinelliae Tuber (Banxia) (one qian).
Grind the above ingredients into a fine powder, make pills using steamed wheat dough soaked in hot water, the size of mung beans. Take thirty pills per dose, chew thoroughly, swallow with plain boiled water, at any time. During the summer months of great heat, yang qi is external and yin qi is internal. If this disease occurs during this time, heaven assists the righteous qi to overcome the pathogenic qi, and it may heal spontaneously without treatment. However, some cases that should heal do not, because yin qi is extremely prosperous and righteous qi cannot extend. For example, in esophageal obstruction (Ge Ye) with a sensation of a lump in the throat, or when severe symptoms occur, the treatment method should involve using Shili Ge Wan to drain lung fire, taken with Huangqi Buzhong Tang. If the legs are sore and cold, walking unsteadily as if about to fall, knees feeling like they are breaking, painful and weak, or shortness of breath, rapid breathing, or inability to lie flat, take Zishen Wan (150 pills) sent down with a decoction of Astragali Membranacei Radix, Ginseng Radix, Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma, Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma, Atractylodis Rhizoma, Alismatis Rhizoma, Polyporus, Poria, and Citrus Reticulatae Pericarpium. Between the sixth and seventh lunar months, damp-heat qi prevails; for shortness of breath and inability to speak, add Schisandrae Chinensis Fructus (Wuweizi) and Ophiopogonis Radix (Maimendong). If there is epigastric fullness and oppression, bloating, and inability to eat, take Xiaopi Wan (50-70 pills) sent down with the aforementioned decoction of Atractylodis Rhizoma and others, after careful examination.
