**Cyan Pulse:** When the cyan pulse appears at the upper position, it is often due to fright from thunder or convulsions of the four limbs; when it appears at the middle position, it is often due to fright and convulsions of the four limbs, with irritability and confusion occurring when thirsty; when it appears at the lower position, it is often the root of repeated fright. If the cyan pulse appears in all three positions (upper, middle, lower), the prognosis is poor, with only one in ten patients surviving.
**Red Pulse:** When the red pulse appears at the upper position, it is often due to wind pathogen entering and staying in the Lung, accompanied by fever and frequent coughing; when it appears at the middle position, it is often due to wind pathogen entering the Heart, accompanied by intestinal pain and frequent passage of green stools; when it appears at the lower position, it is often severe fright injuring the root organ, and regulating the Heart will yield miraculous results. If the red pulse appears in all three positions, it is difficult to treat, and an open mouth with drooping eyes indicates a ominous sign.
**Black Pulse:** When the black pulse appears at the upper position, it is often due to transmission from the Kidney, with eyes staring upward (two distinct conditions need careful differentiation), and stool containing feces mixed with green color; when it appears at the middle position, symptoms resemble Xiao Ke (Wasting and Thirsting Syndrome); when it appears at the lower position, if accompanied by redness, there is frequent diarrhea with Qi descending (Chao Jin Dan should be administered). If the black pulse appears in all three positions, observe the hands; if deficiency vexation, dryness, and thirst are present, seek medical treatment immediately.
Other Related Descriptions:
- In the black pulse, upper black indicates Kidney transmission; middle black indicates lingering disease course; fright mixes with this condition, causing fixed staring eyes and phlegm-saliva (Zhusha Gao may be administered).
- Lower black indicates repeated fright, but promoting Wind and accumulating stool leads to peaceful bowel movements. Upper and lower similarities are due to blows/trauma; heat causes chest oppression and lack of comfort/mood.
- Upper cyan indicates wind stagnation in the Liver, with fixed staring eyes and bluer face; middle indicates fright and four-limb convulsions, with thirst leading to dryness and confusion.
- Lower cyan is originally the root of repeated fright; resolving heat and promoting intestines—what is the discussion? Upper and lower both cyan indicate ominous signs, with only one in ten surviving.
- Upper red indicates wind entering and staying in the Lung, or coming with fever and frequent coughing; middle indicates wind entering the Heart, with frequent intestinal pain and passage of green stools.
- Lower red indicates severe fright seeing the root organ; merely regulating the Heart has miraculous efficacy; upper and lower together are difficult to treat; open mouth and downward eyes indicate ominous signs.
- Upper cyan indicates Liver origin retention, with closed eyes, body pain, and soft four limbs; middle indicates water diarrhea and repeated blows, with heat causing wheezing and coughing without rest (Zhusha Gao may be administered).
- Lower cyan is due to repeated fright; wonderful medicines promote Wind and reduce disaster; if upper and lower are both cyan with fever, cold extremities indicate approaching death.
- Upper black time, eyes stare upward (viewed in two ways), stool flows with feces and green color; middle appearance resembles Xiao Ke; lower heat, yellow urine, and peaceful bowels.
- Lower black if seen with accompanying red, Qi mostly descends with diarrhea as described (administer Chao Jin Dan); upper and lower same requires looking at hands; deficiency vexation, dryness, and thirst require seeking doctors quickly.
