Answer: "Xuan" (dizziness) refers to a spinning sensation. The term "Yun" implies the motion of celestial bodies, which is what people commonly refer to as head dizziness or vertigo. "Mao" refers to a state of being covered or obscured, which corresponds to the worldly description of mental confusion or stupor. *Ming Lilun* states: "Seeing hairs when there are none; seeing blackness when there is no darkness." This describes blurred vision. "Xuan" specifically refers to dimness or blacking out of vision. *Zhen Jing* (The Classic of Acupuncture) states: "Deficiency in the upper part leads to dizziness; deficiency in the lower part leads to Jue (cold extremities/loss of consciousness)." Although dizziness is often due to deficiency, it can also occur in wind-patterns because wind has the nature of movement. In women, dizziness accompanied by phlegm and frequent vomiting resembles the symptoms of "Drunk Head Wind" (a type of severe headache/dizziness).
Xiong Qiang San (Ligusticum and Notopterygium Powder) treats women suffering from Head Wind patterns, accounting for half of such cases. Each attack is characterized by vertigo as if riding in a carriage. This is primarily due to Blood deficiency with Wind pathogen invading the Liver channel. *Su Wen* states: "Xun Meng Che Ji (visual disturbance and pulling sensations), blindness, and deafness. Excess below and deficiency above, the pathology lies in the Foot Shaoyang Gallbladder and Foot Jueyin Liver meridians, and severely, it enters the Liver." This refers to this condition. This formula acts faster and more effectively than other medicines.
