Answer: A maiden who has not yet left her boudoir is a virgin. The first disease occurs when menstruation first begins, with heat in the vagina; this may be caused by exposure to wind or by fanning oneself. The second disease arises when the Chong Mai (Penetrating Vessel) is vigorous, generating internal heat, yet the body is washed with cold water. The third disease involves fright and terror upon seeing vaginal bleeding. If any one of these three conditions is contracted, it will inevitably lead to Dai Xia disease (leukorrhea).
Shenxian Jubao Dan treats deficiency-cold of the Blood Sea in women, external contraction of wind-cold pathogens, which knot together and fail to dissipate, accumulating into masses or forming hard Jia masses (abdominal lumps). It also treats Qi and Blood attacking and pouring, causing pain in the abdomen and hypochondrium, urgency and distension in the lower abdomen, occasional empty rumbling, vomiting of phlegm-saliva, vertigo and blurred vision, heaviness and pain in the legs and knees, sallow complexion, and edema of the limbs. When menstruation is about to start, the patient feels as if suffering from a severe illness; menstrual flow may be either excessive or scanty; leukorrhea may be red and white; Bing Lou (metrorrhagia and metrostaxis) may persist without stopping; palpitations and forgetfulness may occur; urination may be frequent, or clear fluid may discharge; intermittent empty-heat, night sweats, and emaciation may develop. This medicine is suitable for use regardless of whether the patient is pregnant, postpartum, or a virgin. Regular use calms the Shen (Spirit), expels pathogenic factors, drives out stale blood, nourishes new blood, enables conception, and can eliminate various diseases.
Muxiang (Powdered), Hupo (Ground separately), Danggui, Moyao (Ground separately, each 1 liang), Dilu (1 qian, Ground separately), Shexiang (1 qian, Ground separately), Chen Sha (1 qian, Ground separately).
Grind all ingredients into fine powder. Mix with Dilu and cold cooked water, pounding into pills. Each 1 liang of powder makes 15 pills. Take one pill at a time, dissolving it in warm wine. For irregular fetal breath, abdominal pain, and all types of difficult labor, dissolve in warm wine mixed with children's urine, at any time. For postpartum blood dizziness, Benxin (Blood rushing to the heart), lockjaw and stiff tongue, or incomplete expulsion of lochia with thirst and facial edema, dissolve in decoction of sour plums mixed with children's urine. For postpartum Qi and strength deficiency and emaciation where other medicines are ineffective, dissolve in children's urine. For irregular menstruation in virgins, take half a pill dissolved in warm wine.
Answer: Women are the gathering place of Yin, governed primarily by Blood. The Heart governs the movement of Blood, the Spleen contains Blood, and the Liver stores Blood. Excessive injury during the puerperium, or damage caused by emotional extremes such as anger and joy, leads to depletion of Ying Blood. The *Neijing* states: "Qi and Blood are the Spirit of humans." Since Blood is insufficient, the Shen becomes unsettled, resulting in fright and terror. Chao Yuanfang, in the section on "Wind-induced Palpitations," states: "The Heart houses the Shen and is the master of all Zang organs. If Qi and Blood are harmonious, the Heart Shen is stable; if deficient, the Heart Shen becomes timid, allowing Wind pathogens to invade due to deficiency, leading to palpitations. If prolonged, it transforms into恍惚 (absent-mindedness/delirium)."
Jingji Dan treats insufficiency of Qi and Blood in women, deficiency of both Ying and Wei, unstable Heart Qi, nocturnal fright and terror, ominous dreams, spontaneous sweating due to Heart deficiency, fatigue and listlessness, reduced appetite, cough with excess phlegm. Regular use tonifies the Heart and nourishes Blood, calms the Shen and stabilizes the Will, making Blood robust and Qi substantial, with remarkable efficacy.
Baifuling, Baifushen, Baishaoyao (each 1 liang), Yuanzhi (Heart removed, 1 liang), Ruxiang (0.5 liang, Ground separately), Danggui (1 liang, Soaked in wine), Suanzaoren (Shell removed, Stir-fried), Renshen (1 liang), Moyao (1 liang, Ground), Zhusha (Ground separately, 0.5 liang), Shichangpu (1 liang, authentic variety). First, grind Fuzi into fine powder. Then mix with the other three ingredients evenly. Use refined honey to make pills the size of corn kernels. Take one pill at a time with warm wine, once on an empty stomach. Must be prepared in the twelfth lunar month and stored in porcelain vessels.
Shihu San treats deficiency consumption and emaciation, fatigue, poor appetite, listlessness, and frequent fright/fear.
