One method for treating pregnancy aversion to food: allow the pregnant woman to eat whatever she desires freely; this will surely lead to recovery.
When a pregnant woman experiences intermittent abdominal pain or a heavy bearing-down sensation in the lower abdomen, it is called Tai Tong (Fetal Pain). It is appropriate to treat with Di Huang Dang Gui Tang (Rehmannia and Angelica Decoction). If there is no response, add Ren Shen (Ginseng Radix), Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), and Chen Pi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium). If caused by blood and qi issues, add Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus); if caused by deficiency and sinking of Middle Qi leading to pain, then administer Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction).
Shu Di Huang (Prepared Rehmannia Root) [3 qian], Dang Gui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) [1 qian]; decoct and take orally.
For abdominal pain accompanied by a rising sensation, first take Sha Ren (Amomi Fructus) [2 qian, stir-fried] ground into powder, mixed with plain boiled water; the pain will stop immediately. Alternatively, add it to the previous formula for decoction; the effect is miraculous.
In robust women whose pulse in both hands is harmonious, whose diet remains normal, and who suffer no other distress, yet experience dark vaginal bleeding during pregnancy, this is due to vigorous blood and qi, representing residual blood used to nourish the fetus. Once the fetus grows sufficiently, it will absorb this naturally, and it will cease; no treatment is necessary. However, excessive loss should be prevented. The primary approach should be to harmonize blood, cool blood, and strengthen the Spleen. Use Fo Shou San (Buddha's Hand Powder) added with Huang Qin (Scutellariae Radix) and Bai Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma). If the condition persists, add E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin). If blood loss is significant, use Ba Zhen Tang (Eight Treasures Decoction) added with E Jiao (Donkey-hide Gelatin) and Ai Ye (Mugwort Leaf). Another view states that for robust women with Tai Lou (Fetal Leakage/vaginal spotting during pregnancy) without soreness or pain in the waist and legs, being overly cautious may lead to using only An Tai Yin (Fetus-Securing Drink). When menstrual blood accumulates in the uterus during pregnancy, if leakage occurs, the root cause is Qi deficiency failing to guide blood along the meridians. This leads to fetal dryness and damage to the child. If caused by Heat, use Xiao Yao San (Free and Easy Wanderer Powder); if caused by Liver Fire, use Chai Hu Shan Zhi San (Bupleurum and Gardenia Powder); if caused by Spleen Fire, use Jia Wei Gui Pi Tang (Modified Restore the Spleen Decoction); if caused by Spleen Qi deficiency failing to control blood, use Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang (Tonify the Middle and Augment the Qi Decoction).
Tai Lou (Fetal Leakage) can occur because the mother has pre-existing diseases, allowing Wind-Cold to invade the Zi Zang (Uterus), disrupting blood and qi harmony and causing fetal instability with bleeding. It can also occur due to excess Wind in the Ying (Nutrient) Meridian, causing menstrual blood to move frequently and leak intermittently. These two conditions, if treated as Fetal Leakage, will likely result in miscarriage. Using a single herb to treat Wind can stop the bleeding; even if Wind is not specifically treated, it causes no harm. Additionally, deficiency of the Chong and Ren vessels fails to constrain menstrual blood, leading to intermittent monthly bleeding. If not treated early, exhaustion of blood can lead to death. Other causes include Qi and Blood deficiency, Blood Heat and Wind-Heat, Liver Fire and Spleen Fire, Sinking of Spleen and Stomach Qi, Damp-Heat, and Depression/Anger. Practitioners must examine these details carefully.
For cases where severe anger injures the Liver and disturbs blood, use Fo Shou San (Buddha's Hand Powder) added with Zhi Zi (Gardeniae Fructus, stir-fried) and Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba). This is because Fo Shou San (Buddha's Hand Powder) can calm fetal movement and expel damaged fetus tissue.
