During the sixth or seventh month of pregnancy, if the pulse is wiry accompanied by fever, the fetus feels increasingly distended, with abdominal pain, aversion to cold, and a sensation of cold in the lower abdomen as if fanned by wind, this indicates deficiency-cold of the uterus (Zi Zang).
Fuzi (Aconiti Lateralis Radix Praeparata) (0.8 fen), Renshen (Ginseng Radix et Rhizoma), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Fuling (Poria) (each 1 qian), Shaoyao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) (1 qian). Decoct in water and take orally.
Facial puffiness and edema of the four limbs resembling water retention are all caused by Spleen deficiency failing to transport fluids, resulting in the failure to separate clear from turbid. Treatment should focus on tonifying the Spleen and promoting diuresis, using substantial amounts of Renshen and Baizhu. Mr. Shan stated that if caused by watery diarrhea, Quansheng Baizhu San should be taken.
Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma), Jiangpi (Zingiberis Rhizoma Cum Scama), Dafupi (Arecae Pericarpium), Fulingpi (Poria Cum Cortice) (each 0.5 qian). If stools are unformed, add Zexie (Alismatis Rhizoma), Shanyao (Dioscoreae Rhizoma), Bian Dou (Phaseoli Semen), Qin Jiao (Gentianae Macrophyllae Radix). If there is heat, add Huangqin Zi (Scutellariae Fructus), grind into powder, and take 2 qian per dose with rice soup. This addresses fetal water disease and ordinary Spleen deficiency causing swelling and fullness.
Dafupi (Arecae Pericarpium), Sangbaipi (Mori Cortex), Fulingpi (Poria Cum Cortice), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Jiangpi (Zingiberis Rhizoma Cum Scama) (equal parts). Add Muxiang (Aucklandiae Radix), decoct strongly, and take half a cup of the juice. ([Wu's Note]: Some replace Sangbaipi with Wujiapi (Acanthopanacis Cortex), which is also appropriate.) This treats enlarged abdomen during pregnancy due to fluid accumulation between the fetus.
Baizhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) (5 liang), Fuling (Poria) (4 liang), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Chuanxiong (Ligustici Chuanxiong Rhizoma) (each 2 liang). Cut into slices. Take one whole cleaned carp, boil to extract fish broth. Mix the herbs evenly with the fish broth. Take 4 qian per dose, using 1.5 cups of fish broth, three slices of ginger, and a little Chenpi. Decoct and take on an empty stomach. Treats Zi Zhong (pregnancy edema).
