[Daquan] Whenever childbirth is completed, drink a cup of hot urine from an uncircumcised boy. Do not lie down immediately; instead, sit with eyes closed for a moment, then get into bed. It is advisable to lie on the back rather than on the side, with knees upright and legs unextended, leaning high against the headboard. Use thick bedding, surround the four walls to eliminate gaps, preventing invasion by pathogenic wind (external evil wind). Subsequently, apply vinegar to the nose, or use vinegar-smoked charcoal and burnt lacquerware fumes. Additionally, massage from the heart down to below the umbilicus to prevent stagnation of lochia (postpartum discharge of blood and mucus). Maintain this for three days to prevent syncope due to blood loss (blood fainting) and counterflow of qi and blood. Regardless of abdominal pain or health status, take half a cup of urine from an uncumcised boy mixed with wine, warmed and taken five to seven times, which is excellent. Although wine promotes blood circulation, it should not be consumed in excess, as it may draw blood into the limbs and cause dizziness. Frequently consume small amounts of white rice porridge. After one month, consume small amounts of mutton and pig trotters. Still, be cautious with speech, regulate the Seven Emotions (joy, anger, worry, thought, sadness, fear, fright), avoid extreme cold and heat, and refrain from combing hair or washing feet, taking one hundred days as the duration. If the patient's qi and blood are inherently weak, regardless of the time elapsed, otherwise symptoms such as soreness and pain in the hands, feet, waist, and legs will occur, known as postpartum labor injury (Rulao), which is difficult to treat. At the time of initial delivery, do not ask about the gender of the infant, lest speech deplete qi, or love/hatred stir qi, both of which can cause disease. Do not live alone, lest causing empty fright; do not scrape the tongue, lest damaging heart qi; do not brush teeth, lest causing counterflow of blood. Only after qi and blood have stabilized may one attend to affairs. Violating these taboos initially causes symptoms as slight as autumn hairs, but once illness sets in, it becomes heavy as mountains. Can one not be vigilant? (Chen Cangqi said: Soak ramie juice and give it to the parturient woman to drink, or place ramie as a pillow for her to stop blood fainting. For postpartum abdominal pain, placing ramie on the abdomen stops the pain.) If the parturient woman rests according to these methods, the zang-fu organs will harmonize, and various ailments will be avoided. One must first take Heishen San (Black Divine Powder), Siwu Tang (Four Substance Decoction), Sishun Lizhong Wan (Four-Directional Regulating Middle Pill), and Qibao San (Seven Treasures Powder). If there is high fever and headache, this indicates the milk channels are about to flow; use Yulu San (Jade Dew Powder). If the head and eyes are unclear, it is blood fainting; use Qinghun San (Clear Soul Powder). If food tastes bland, it is deficiency of stomach qi; use Sishun Lizhong Wan.
[Danxi] Someone asked: A woman who has just given birth has depleted her good blood (normal blood), and dirty blood (stasis) may remain. Is Heishen San not an essential medicine? The answer is: Indeed, the primal yin energy of the earth gives life to all things; this is the constant principle. A woman who has just given birth does not necessarily have depleted good blood, accumulated dirty blood, or cold zang-fu organs. Why use medicine? With diligent care in diet and daily life, what illness would there be? If there is indeed stasis, and the body is weak and cold, giving a few doses is naturally simple. If there are other diseases, one should seek the cause, determine the affected meridian, treat qi disorders by regulating qi, and blood disorders by regulating blood. Why cling to this formula and order everyone to take it? Suppose there are those with impatient temperaments, thin constitutions, pre-existing fire-heat, or those sitting confinement in summer when fire-energy is prevalent; ginger and cinnamon are forbidden medicines. Furthermore, the method of care is particularly contrary to reason. Meat broth stimulates fire in the yin meridians, easily leading to internal injury diseases. The sages had warnings; why use thick mutton and chicken broth as gruel and take it frequently? Danggui Wan (Angelica Pill), Danggui Jianzhong Tang (Angelica Decoction to Establish the Middle), and Sishun Lizhong Wan, although tonics, are all biased towards heat. If the zang-fu are not cold, where can they endure it? As for the newborn, the mother's abdomen suddenly expands. Immediately eating eggs and consuming salty foods—without considering that eggs are hard to digest and salt generates heat—leads to complications whose cause is unknown. Prescribing medicine hastily, does this not harm people? I often see healthy postpartum women; I teach them to discard Heishen San, eggs, salty foods, and various meats, relying only on white rice porridge for care, occasionally adding some dried fish boiled lightly. After half a month, give small amounts of meat. If eating eggs, boil them lightly cracked open; this greatly nourishes the stomach and dispels disease. Those wealthy families and indulgent women suddenly suffer from leukorrhea with headache (Baidai Touteng), qi pain with chest fullness, rebellious phlegm with dry mouth, irregular menstruation, hair loss with fatigue. These are all diseases of excessive yang and deficient yin. Innate qi and blood are originally peaceful. To speak of excess or deficiency, how do we know if these errors and confusion did not initiate them?
*Qianjin Fang* says: Generally, after childbirth, one may engage in sexual intercourse only after one hundred days; otherwise, death ensues, weakness increases, and myriad diseases grow. Be cautious. Any woman suffering from wind-cold and deficiency-cold below the navel usually arises from early sexual activity postpartum. Within seven days after childbirth, when lochia is not yet exhausted, do not take medicinal decoctions. Wait until the mass below the navel dissipates, then advance to mutton soup. Cases with severe pain are exceptions. After two or three days of stability, Ze Lan Wan (Lycium Root Pill) may be taken. It is best to finish the pills by the end of the first month; otherwise, deficiency cannot be resolved. In cases of extreme emaciation that are incurable, Wushi Zelan Wan (Five-Stone Lycium Root Pill) is used for supplementation. Medication must not be taken before the seventh day.
For women who give birth during the hot summer months, taking too much coolness leads to wind-cold accumulation in the abdomen, myriad diseases arise, and eventually death occurs. Hundred remedies fail to cure; Taoren Jian (Peach Kernel Paste) is the primary treatment. Take this after the confinement period. Even if women have no disease, they should take one or two doses every autumn and winter, continuing through the year, which is optimal.
Danxi said: Postpartum, the priority is to greatly tonify qi and blood. Even if there are miscellaneous syndromes, treat them as secondary. Postpartum, one must never use diaphoretic (sweat-inducing) methods. Postpartum, one must not use Shaoyao (White Peony Root), because its sour and cold nature destroys the generating and ascending qi.
[General Formulas]
Jiawei Sijunzi Tang (Modified Four Gentlemen Decoction) After new childbirth, even without disease, one should rest and regulate the spleen and stomach, eat well, so that zang-fu organs recover easily, qi and blood harmonize naturally, and myriad diseases do not arise.

Sheng Dihuang (Rehmanniae Radix, fresh, pressed for juice, retain dregs), Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma, fresh) (each 2 jin, pressed for juice, retain dregs), Puhuang (Typhae Pollen), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix) (each 4 liang).
In a silver or earthenware vessel, stir-fry the ginger dregs with the Rehmannia juice, and stir-fry the Rehmannia dregs with the ginger juice, drying each separately. Roast the four ingredients together, grind to fine powder, and form pills using vinegar-boiled wheat paste, sized like marbles. Take one pill before meals, dissolved in Danggui-infused wine. Another prescription uses only Dihuang and Shengjiang, prepared via alternating stir-frying method into powder. Take 3 qian per dose with wine.
Danggui San (Angelica Powder) (See section on spontaneous abortion and miscarriage above.)
Siwei Tang (Four-Ingredient Decoction) Treats all postpartum diseases; most effective taken immediately after delivery.

Mix evenly, slowly simmer in a silver vessel to form a paste. Take half a spoonful mixed with warm wine. Adding Bei Zhu (Atractylodis Macrocephalae Rhizoma) paste is even better. *Chanbao* formula omits Hemp Seed, using White Honey instead, treating postpartum exhaustion, night sweats, and vomiting.
Dihuang Jiu (Rehmannia Wine) Treats myriad postpartum diseases. Brew one month before delivery; take after birth.
Dihuang Zhi (Rehmannia Juice), Hao Qu (Good Yeast), Hao Jing Shumi (Good Clean Sorghum Rice, steamed) (each 2 sheng).
First soak yeast in Rehmannia juice to ferment, follow family method to brew until ripe. Seal for seven days, take the clear liquid. Consume regularly so the effect of the wine is continuous, do not let it cease. Avoid garlic, raw/cold foods, slippery foods, chicken, pork, and all toxic substances. All women can take this, but do not brew in the three summer months; spring and autumn are suitable. Use Rehmannia juice and dregs, mix with rice and steam together. If making one dan or ten dan, use this ratio of two sheng as the standard. Take Danggui Tang first, then this is superior.

[Diagnosis] After childbirth, if the Cun Kou pulse (radial artery at the wrist) is surging, rapid, and irregular, death ensues. If the pulse is deep, minute, and unbroken upon pressing to the bone, life is preserved. For a woman who has just given birth and is nursing, if the pulse is deep, small, and slippery, life is preserved; if the pulse is solid, large, firm, wiry, and rapid, death ensues.
