Treats postpartum evil blood rushing to the heart, or retained placenta (retained placenta), abdominal blood masses, and other ailments. (Same as recorded in *Beiji Qianjin Yaofang*)
Take one liang of Dahuang (Rhubarb Rhizome) ground into powder, boil with half sheng of good vinegar until it forms a paste, mix the powder with the paste to make pills the size of paulownia seeds. Swallow five pills with warm vinegar water. The evil substances will be discharged after a while; do not take excessively.
Treats retained placenta. One Gualuo Shi (Trichosanthes Fruit) (extract the seeds, grind finely).
Take half a zhan of wine and half a zhan of child's urine, decoct until three-tenths remain, remove the dregs, and take warm. (If the fruit is unavailable, the root may be used instead.)
Another prescription: Honghua (Carthamus Flower) one liang, decoct with wine to obtain a concentrated juice and drink.
Another prescription: Lu Jiao (Deer Antler) shaved into fine pieces, three fen, ground into powder, taken with scallion white soup.
Whenever childbirth is imminent, one must first remove the clothes usually worn and cover the stove with them; the placenta will naturally descend, facilitating delivery. This is highly effective. *Guangji Fang* states: Take the husband's single-layer garment and cover the wellhead; the placenta will emerge immediately. (Same as recorded in *Qianjin Fang*, *Jiyan Fang*, *Jiuji Fang*, Cui's prescriptions, and *Duanju Fang*)
Among all diseases affecting women, none is more severe than childbirth. In obstetrics, nothing is more critical during labor than inducing delivery; after delivery, nothing is more dangerous than retained placenta. Among all remedies, Huarui Shi San (Orpiment Powder) is the most crucial. Although formulas such as Heishen San (Black Divine Powder) and Hupo San (Amber Powder) are effective, if one lives in a rural area or far from a pharmacy, no remedy can be applied in an emergency. I have now collected a wonderful method from Hu's *Baoqing Fang*: If the placenta does not descend after delivery, and delay persists, not only will the mother become exhausted, but blood will flow into the uterus, causing distension. The blood will rush upward to the chest and heart, causing panting, urgency, and pain, leading to critical danger. If these symptoms occur, one should immediately cut the umbilical cord and tie a small object to it to hang down. (When tying the object, one must be extremely careful. Tie it first, then cut. Otherwise, the uterus may rise and compress the heart, causing death.) This prevents fetal blood from flowing back into the uterus, so the placenta will naturally shrink and descend. Even if delayed for several days, it will not harm the person. As long as the mother remains calm, the placenta will eventually descend. This has been tested repeatedly with success. Do not readily trust midwives who use manual manipulation; many have died because of this, which is deeply lamentable. Therefore, Hu re-cites this method, relying on personal observation as evidence.
