Treats febrile diseases during pregnancy resulting in a dead fetus retained in the uterus, employing purgation.
Lu Jiao Xie (Deer Horn Shavings) (1 liang)
Take the above ingredients with one cup of water, five stalks of Cong Bai (Scallion White), and half he of Chi Dou (Fermented Soybean). Decoct until six-tenths remains, remove the dregs, and take warm. It is highly effective.
Another prescription: To expel the dead fetus. Wu Ji Fang (Black Chicken Decoction)
Wu Ji (Black Chicken) (one whole chicken, feathers removed)
Finely chop the chicken, add three sheng of water, and boil to obtain two sheng. Remove the chicken meat. Dip a silk cloth into the liquid, using hand warmth to rub the area below the umbilicus. The dead fetus will naturally be expelled.
Discussion states: Malaria occurring during pregnancy is caused by summer-heat pathogen contracted in summer, lodging in the skin. In autumn, due to fatigue and movement of blood and qi, the Cou Li (skin pores and interstices) become deficient, allowing wind pathogen to invade.
This stirs up the previous summer-heat, causing a struggle between Yin and Yang. When Yang is excessive, there is heat; when Yin is excessive, there is cold. When Yin and Yang separate, both cold and heat symptoms cease. If the pathogen disturbs the Qi, it manifests when Yin and Yang struggle, hence malaria has regular intervals of attack and remission. When the time of attack gradually delays, it is because the wind pathogen lodges at Feng Fu (GV16) and travels down along the Du Mai (Governing Vessel). Wei Qi (Defensive Qi) gathers at Feng Fu once every day and night, so the attacks occur later each day. When the time of attack advances, the movement of Wei Qi at Feng Fu descends one vertebral level daily. After twenty-one days, it reaches the coccyx; on the twenty-second day, it enters the spine and ascends into the Fu Wei Mai (Hidden Defensive Meridian). After traveling for nine days, it emerges from within Que Pen (Clavicular Fossa). Since its Qi has ceased, the attacks occur earlier. When attacks occur every other day, it is because the wind pathogen forces inward upon the Zang Organs and spreads horizontally to the Mu Yuan (Sea of Origin). The pathway is distant, the Qi is deep, and its movement is slow, preventing daily attacks; thus, it accumulates spasms before manifesting every other day.
When this occurs during pregnancy, the cold and heat Qi press against each other, damaging the fetus, often leading to injury or miscarriage.

Chang Shan (Dichroa Root) Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (each 1 liang) Gan Cao (Licorice Root, honey-fried) Huang Qin (Scutellaria Root) (each 0.5 liang) Wu Mei (Mume Fruit) (14 pieces, stir-fried)
Finely cut the ingredients. Mix one large cup of wine and one large cup of water. Soak overnight. At dawn, decoct until one cup remains. Remove dregs and divide into two doses.

Heng Shan (Synonym for Chang Shan/Dichroa Root) Zhu Ye (Bamboo Leaf) (each 3 liang) Shi Gao (Gypsum Fibrosum) (8 liang, crushed) Nuo Mi (Glutinous Rice) (100 grains)
Cut the ingredients. Add six sheng of water and boil to obtain two and a half sheng. Remove dregs and divide into three doses. Take the first dose one meal's duration before the anticipated onset. Take the second dose just as the fever is about to start. Apply the remaining portion to the forehead and the "Five Hearts" (both palms, both soles, and the chest/heart center). Place the medicinal dregs near the head. On the day of the attack, abstain from water and food. Resume intake of porridge and drinks after the fever subsides. Avoid raw scallions and vegetables.
