The three syndromes of Jingkou (Jaw-locking), Cuokou (Mouth-puckering), and Qifeng (Umbilical Wind) in newborns, although named differently, share the same etiology. Jingkou syndrome is characterized by closed eyes, jaw-locking, gradually decreasing crying sounds, granules resembling millet seeds accumulating on the tongue, a stiff tongue unable to suckle milk, expulsion of white foam from the mouth, while urination and defecation remain unobstructed. This is generally caused by the fetus contracting heat-toxin in the womb, which flows into the Heart and Spleen meridians, thus manifesting symptoms in the throat and tongue; after birth, it is further attacked by wind-pathogens, leading to abdominal distension and widespread cyanotic veins on the abdomen. If these symptoms appear within 120 days after birth, it is termed "Fan Feng Jin" (Offending Wind Taboo), also known as "Tai Jing" (Fetal Startle). By following standard care methods and preventing it before it occurs, this condition can be avoided.
Cuokou syndrome presents with yellowish complexion, rapid breathing, cyanotic lips with puckered mouth, and inability to cry. This is due to fetal qi combined with heat, along with wind-pathogen entering the umbilicus and flowing into the Heart and Spleen meridians, causing tongue stiffness, lip cyanosis, mouth puckering, facial wrinkling, and difficulty in suckling. If white foam issues from the mouth and the four limbs become cold, it is incurable.
Qifeng syndrome occurs after umbilical cord cutting, when water-dampness and wind-cold pathogens take advantage of the opening. The wind-damp qi enters the umbilicus and also flows into the Heart and Spleen, resulting in abdominal distension, umbilical swelling, body rigidity, incessant crying day and night, inability to suckle, and in severe cases, development of wind-tremors (convulsions); if lips are cyanotic, mouth is puckered, and the skin around the umbilicus is dark blue-black, it indicates internal tremors, which are untreatable; black fingernails also indicate an untreatable condition. However, if heat is trapped in the chest and diaphragm, causing the infant to extend limbs and strain, it may also cause umbilical swelling, which resolves with medication promoting drainage. The source of pathology for these three syndromes is not accumulated overnight. During pregnancy, if the mother experiences worry, thought, fear, or panic, fails to observe taboos, and indulges in spicy, pungent, and toxic foods, and after birth is exposed to external wind, the internal and external qi becomes stagnant and obstructed, generating these syndromes. *Qianjin Fang* states: When a child is first born, its qi is still fragile; if illness occurs, purgation must be applied immediately. If not purged promptly, major diseases will develop and become difficult to treat. The term "purge" here does not refer to harsh purgation for excess patterns, but merely using medicine to clear and unblock heat-toxin. If this syndrome occurs within seven days after birth, fewer than two out of one hundred survive. In such cases, examine the gums for small blisters the size of millet grains. Wrap a finger with cloth, dip it in warm water, and rub until the blister breaks; the infant will open its mouth and calm down without needing medication, which is also a good method. If there are white bean-sized spots on the upper and lower gums, pinch them with the middle of the thumbnail from outside to inside; slight bleeding is acceptable. Alternatively, prick them with a needle; if white stars are found inside, wipe them away to achieve calmness. All the above methods are effective; select and use one.
