Whenever a woman is pregnant, she should maintain a pure heart and abstain from desires. Her diet should be bland; she must avoid fried, spicy, pungent, and strong-flavored foods, as well as the meat of birds and beasts. By speaking and acting uprightly and nurturing the fetal origin (Taiyuan), the child born will surely be intelligent, well-proportioned, free from disease, and long-lived. If a young woman does not observe these prohibitions, treating spicy and roasted foods as daily staples, indulging in sexual intercourse without restraint, and sitting or standing with a slanted posture, the child born will surely be dull-witted, thus prone to illness and premature death. Furthermore, if during pregnancy one suffers from fright or terror, such as climbing mountains or entering temples to worship deities, causing fear in the mind, the fetus will be affected, resulting in symptoms of fetal惊 (Fetal Fright) after birth. Or, if conception occurs while indulging in coldness during summer months, or huddling by fireplaces in winter, heat toxins accumulate within the fetus. Consequently, upon birth, conditions such as double tongue (Chong She), wooden tongue (Mu She), thrush (E Kou), infantile malnutrition sores (Gan Chuang), cocoon lip (Jian Chun), various wind sores, scabies, tinea, and erysipelas (Chi You Dan Du) manifest as various fetal toxins (Tai Du). All these are due to the mother's lack of purity. Feeding infants through obscene lactation causes abdominal masses (Pi Kuai) to form. Those who frequently use aphrodisiacs and hot medicines in sexual activities, or whose parents have suffered from yaws (Yang Mei Chuang) and other toxic sores, transmit particularly severe toxins, leading to the certain premature death of the child. It is advisable to administer detoxifying medicines early to prevent complications such as smallpox and sand-rash (Dou Sha). Fetal toxins are too numerous to list; the following formulas are all excellent remedies for treating fetal toxins. Selection and application will yield effective results. In treating fetal toxins, one must seek the root cause to achieve efficacy.
For fetal惊 (Fetal Fright): Use Niuhuang Babao San (Coral and Musk Eight-Treasure Powder) and Hupo Baolong Wan (Amber Embracing Dragon Pill). (See section on Convulsions.)
For those with severe heat toxins contracted in the womb: Use Liangge San (Cooling the Diaphragm Powder) [taken by both mother and child] and Huadu Dan (Detoxifying Pill). [Take with decoction of Sheng Dihuang / Rehmanniae Radix].
For fetal toxins involving yaws and various sore toxins: Use Dexiao Liangfang (Effective Good Formula). (See section on Chancres.)
For toxins from aphrodisiacs in the womb: Use Zixue Dan (Purple Snow Pill) and Chencha Yiyuan San (Cinnabar Benefiting Origin Powder) [add Hupo / Amber and Bingpian / Borneol].
Double tongue (Chong She): A small tongue regenerates under the main tongue, unable to suckle. Wooden tongue (Mu She): The tongue swells, becomes hard and fills the mouth, unable to suckle. Treat with Jin Suoshi (Golden Lock Key), Huadu Dan, and Bingpeng San. (Section on Surgical Oral Diseases: Must first bleed using silver needle scarification before applying medication.)
Thrush (E Kou Chuang): White debris covers the gums and tongue, filling the mouth; if it enters the throat, death ensues. Treat with Huadu Dan [dissolved in Shengdi Huanglian Tang / Rehmannia and Coptis Decoction] and Lv Pao San (Green Robe Powder) [add Bingpian / Borneol; first clean the area with Huanglian, Bohe, and Gancao decoction before applying medication].
Erysipelas (Chi You Dan Du): Appears like clouds, red-purple in color. First perform scarification to bleed, then apply topical medication. If it arises on the head, face, or limbs and enters the Heart, death ensues.
Cocoon lip (Jian Chun): Upper and lower lips pinch tightly, unable to nurse. Various sore toxins, scabies, and tinea capitis (Fei Chuang): (Surgical Sores Section). Red eyes, ulcerated eyes, and eye swelling: (oozing bloody fluid). Hematuria and red spot ulcerative sores: (All belong to fetal toxins).
Modified Liangge San: Treats all types of fetal toxins.
Fangfeng (Saposhnikoviae Radix), Jingjie (Schizonepetae Spica), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Lianqiao (Forsythiae Fructus), Shanzhi (Gardeniae Fructus), Huangqin (Scutellariae Radix), Jiegeng (Platycodonis Radix), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Chi Fu (Poria with Red Core), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma) [each 1 qian], Pomiao (Natrii Sulfas), Dahuang (Rhei Radix et Rhizoma) [2 qian; increase by 2 qian if purgation is desired; for regular use, add Danggui / Angelicae Sinensis Radix and remove Pomiao and Dahuang].
Fangtong Tongsheng San (also effective): Two zhong of water, decoct to one and a half zhong; taken by both mother and child.
For sore toxins: Add Tufuling (Smilax Glabrae Rhizoma) [2 liang]; for lower body conditions: add Mugua (Chaenomelis Fructus), Yiyiren (Coicis Semen), and Niuxi (Achyranthis Bidentatae Radix).
Niangru Fang (Lactation Preparation Formula): To ensure the infant's safety, first regulate the mother. The mother is the source of milk. This formula governs this condition.
Baizhu (Stir-fried), Fuling (Poria), Chenpi (Citri Reticulatae Pericarpium), Gancao (Glycyrrhizae Radix et Rhizoma), Danggui (Angelicae Sinensis Radix), Baishao (Stir-fried Paeoniae Radix Alba), Shengdi (Rehmanniae Radix), Bohe (Menthae Haplocalycis Herba), Huafen (Trichosanthis Radix), Xiangfu (Cyperi Rhizoma), Mutong (Akebiae Caulis) [equal parts; modify according to symptoms].
Add three slices of Shengjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma Recens) and twenty cun of Dengxincao (Junci Medullae); decoct two ou of water to one ou and two fen; taken by both mother and child. In summer, add Xiangru (Elsholtziae Herba), Houpo (Magnoliae Officinalis Cortex), and Huanglian (Coptidis Rhizoma); in winter, add Zisu (Perillae Folium), Guizhi (Cinnamomi Ramulus), and Ganjiang (Zingiberis Rhizoma) [use sparingly].
For infants suffering from vomiting and diarrhea: Nursing can be suspended for one or two nights without harm; rice soup should be given instead of milk. Medication will take effect thereafter.
For low milk supply: Add Chansanjia powder (Manis Pentadactyla) [1 qian]. For breast distension: Use Maiya (Hordei Fructus Germinatus) [2 liang, stir-fried], decoct in water, and take orally.
